Yep, maybe too far back. Where mine is I was able to use the stock holes in the frame for trans. crossmember to bolt my 4L65 to.

What motor mounts would you guys recommend if you want the motor to sit in the best position w/o having to do any frame trimming, if that can be done? i am running a 5.3 efi in a 70 frame, and i am not running a/c, but i might in the future. i keep reading about cpp mounts, ece mounts, and now i am hearing about all these others and how they affect the motor position. someone plz help clarify for me. thx.

You might want to look at Dirty Dingo mounts, they have slots that allow the motor some leeway front & back once you get it in the frame.

My 87 build has some pics of how they look. You can always call Brent at Dirty Dingo as well to discuss how they would fit.

I don't know firsthand about how they compare to the other brands.

These would be the closest:

I'm about to order these but I want to make sure they will work before I do. Does the side with the holes for the motor mount point to the front or the back of the engine?

the sbc mounts will be toward the front... as the brackets mount on the block.

2 Attachment(s)
I made my own by useing clam shells centered over the front holes on the lsx mount. I used 83-87 towers in the rear holes wich set the motor back about 1-" back my f body header (driver side) then hit the lower control arm. so i yanked the motor and moved the towers back as far as possible and drilled new holes in the fram and member. I ended up 2.25 back but then had to re do my fire wall because the motor hit. but I also have a 3" body drop. it may not hit on a stock set up. my long tube cleared the lower arms great but i still had to notch the frame some because the collectors kick out so far.

not really.....but maybe these will give you an idea. I actually could go back a bit further....and probably will some day.

68gmccustom, so did or didn't the trans rapt plates work with your headers? I'm confused so many options but I think I'm gonna try and run your same headers .my truck is currently a 6 cylinder so I was thinking your headers and trans dapt. 1" set back plates.

Re: Which motor mounts set the motor back the most?

Yes, using the sbc towers, mounted in the forward position...with the 1" Trans Dapt setback plates the DynaTech '70-'81 Camaro LSx swap headers fit. The tubes were real close in a couple of places and I was concerned about motor movement so I trimmed maybe 1/8" off the top frame rail where the offending tubes were too close to the frame. With a motor plate or some retaining straps maybe I could have gone w/o trimming.

That said....my motor could go back another few inches ...and the headers would only fit better.

I tried the 6cyl stands with 1" set back plates, motor fit, trans (4l80E) hit my low hump cab. If I had a high hump I think it would have fit.

Re: Which motor mounts set the motor back the most?

good to know....considering a 4L80e upgrade sometime in the future.

I used these and they set the motor back perfect, and are also the adjustable type. I'm not sure how much the other brands cost but I couldnt pass up this price.

Re: Which motor mounts set the motor back the most?

I plan on mounting coil packs on rear of heads. So with sbc stands and trans rapt 1" set back plates would there be enough room for the coil packs? If I kept my 6 cylinder stands would they put me further back?

.

Re: Which motor mounts set the motor back the most?

use the sbc mounts in the front/forward position with your 1" setback plates and you'll have plenty of room. that's where I'm at now. depending on the coil pack setup you use...you might even be able to go another 1" or so further back.
