Re: 66 GMC Fleetside Okie Daily Driver

wow have tried to drive the wheels off my gmc this weekend but we had another fuel pump failure, I think I found the answer, the return line to tank is restricted and needs to be drilled out, So everyone beware....if you are trying to run TBI with a 14psi fuel system be sure and drill out the restriction in the fuel tank (blazer tank) or your stock tank before you toast 2 $150.00 fuel pumps like I did. Re: 66 GMC Fleetside Okie Daily Driver

thanks for all the positive feedback, did eventually figure out what happened on the fuel pumps, we used the wrong line between the tank and the pump, it was not rated for the TBI and we think the fuel line was collapsing and causing the fuel pump to cavitate. We burned up 2 Carter P5001 ($199.00 list at NAPA) ended up with a Air tex E8094 ($112.00 at auto zone) changed the line out for fuel injection rubber hose , put the Airtex pump on and it runs like a champ.......Kieth

Kieth in Tulsa, Ok Don't be afraid to call be is you need any details on how we did certain things in the build.

Tailgate finally painted and installed, had more glitches with the paint on this thing than we would care to remember, peeling paint, runs, more runs, sanding marks, finally finished, batteries are dead in the camera will take pictures asap.......and post. Next step ordered 2.5" drop spindles for the front,,,,,,,,,installed the body braces for the bed, solved a issue withe the rear tires hitting the lower lip of the fenderwell.......can lower it in the back and it rides great and does not hit when going up the driveway. "Does this process ever stop ? Is the truck ever really finished ? well it is kind of fun and addicting..........Kieth :waah: :uhmk:

Re: 66 GMC Fleetside Okie Daily Driver

Well I am almost done, waiting on drop spindles for front, air valve for rear suspension, I am going to lower the front some and then the rear just a little more...will get to the a/C this winter do not need it now the weather is really nice in T town now. Hope it has cooled off for you as well. Kieth

Driving her every day is a lot of fun, but you cannot go anywhere without people asking questions, pesky people...........ha ha I love it................Kieth

Yeah it's cooled off some here too. We had 80's last week and overnights in the 60's! Felt like winter for a bit after all those 100+ days. Hopefully those days are done for the year. :)

I think the comments and questions will be half the fun for you!

Looking real nice kieth. I'm wanting to achieve a look close to that myself. Where the wheels just fill the wheel well. Nicely done sir!

! LOVE this truck. :)

I gotta figure out how far you are from my parents (Bella Vista, AR) - might need to take a road trip the next time I visit them. :D

Re: 66 GMC Fleetside Okie Daily Driver

thanks Sam, it is a tight fit on the rear---if you want to do this look make sure the rear axle is back about 1.5" right now my rear tires barely clear the front bottom of the fenderwell if I would have moved it back there would be no issues.....Kieth

Scot, Bella vista is about 2 hours from Tulsa or 3 hours when we ride our motorcycles and take the back roads---------You would be welcome anytime. Kieth

Hi Kieth I don't know where the instructions are either but when you write a message in the square in the heading at the top there is a attachment icon next to the white smilie face. Click the icon a box will pop up and you can select what you want to download from your cp pictures, documents, videos ect. Hope that works for you....Vernski:lol:

Latest stance pictures: I like it lowed more every day, it handles better, but to make it work properly I will have to make some changes.

1. move the rear axle back 1.5"---for clearance of the large rear tires

2. move the air bags back the same 1.5"

3. move the shocks to a more vertical position at the back side of the axle.

OH well it never ends:

Latest Stance:

Reason for moving the rear axle back:

Re: 66 GMC Fleetside Okie Daily Driver

Before moving the axle back 1.5", which involves moving the air bag mount, adding spacers to the trailing arm mount (or moving the crossmember back, relocating the panhard bar, and moving the shocks and shock mounts, I got under the truck and looked a little today. Had read a lot of stuff on making these old trucks handle and the first step was to install a 2 x 2" solid steel block to lower the truck inexpensively.

So I thought hum, wonder if I could add that block and at the same time move the rear axle back. Drew up a little 2x2 x 9" block that we could bolt from the bottom of the trailing arm in the stock location, drill and tap 2 holes in the stock location then drill and tap 2 new holes in the top of the bar 1.5" back then add a strap to the top of the rear end to replace the U bolt and voila the axle is back without major work, the truck is lowered, the trailing arms have more clearance so the truck can go lower, it does not cost much, and it is easy to do.......what do you folks think ? Kieth :gmc2:

ps----the panhard rod has to be relocated at the same time.

Re: 66 GMC Fleetside Okie Daily Driver

word of warning for all those installing fuel injected engines, when buying the fuel pump and the fuel tank, get the tank with the fuel pump in the tank, it will save you a lot of grief.......................JMO

ps 4 electric fuel pumps burned up--------------learn from my mistakes. Kieth

Re: 66 GMC Fleetside Okie Daily Driver

Lessons learned in this build:

1. Body work is Chinese water torture

2. have a donor vehicle and keep it around you never know when you will need something else off of it.

3. replace all front end parts with new stuff, it is not that expensive including rotors, bearings, disc brake calipers, brake lines, power steering lines, hoses, belts.......

4. Make sure you check the clearance of the fenders with the wheels and tires you purchase along with the lug bolt pattern.

5. Listen to the pros on which air bags to use where.......

6. If going with really wide rear wheels and tires move the whole crossmember &:waah: suspension back 1.5"

7. Use original body parts if possible they are lots better than the new stuff

8. If you are going to alter the stance of your truck start with -2.5" front spindles-----then go from there.....

9. It is cheaper to buy a truck some one has already done all the work on but not nearly as satisfying...........:uhmk:

10. If you install a fuel injected engine use all metal lines and install the fuel pump in the tank.....

11. When moving the crossmember back be sure and drill out the rivets for the Trailing arm bushings. Even if you are not going to lower your truck now you may need to flip these brackets in the future and drilling the rivets and replacing with good bolts will allow that mod to be made without any problems........Remember it is a lot easier to modify the suspension and frame with the body off and it will look better later also.
