Do you have any more pictures of the rollback?

Ok, back to the thread... I got one thing done today. The rear tires are mounted...I started sandblasting the crossmember, but a little moisture ended the day early. I received a package at my office, hmmm, could it be the exhaust all ready? I'll find out tomorrow.

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
That is a beautiful rollback. Did you buy it that way or did you build that one? I have a 1970 C30 with the 157" wb and HD frame. I also have 86 ford rollback with 17' aluminum bed. I have considered stretching the C30 wheelbase and putting the rollback bed on that.

Time to get after that crossmember...
Supported driveshaft, and cut out the rivets. |

Mocking up "new" crossmember

Primary support is welded...since I couldn't finish the sandblasting, I am using a "rust-stop" product, then I'll cover with flat black enamel.

Fabricating the parts for the upper supports of the crossmember. The first one took some time, but the second one was a breeze...now that I know how to do it, I'll probably never have to make another crossmember again...

Put the crossmember back together and bolted it in tight. Rust-stop type paint and tomorrow I'll spray the flat black for final coat. My goal was to support the carrier bearing with a crossmember that didn't look "hokey"...I think I hit the mark pretty well...

I am going to leave Dolly on the rack a little while longer. The exhaust came in, and soon I'll start mocking that up. My only concern will be the "exhaust manifold to pipe" studs...wish me luck.

Starting to mock up the exhaust...a word of advice, do not throw away good old parts. Take for instance the exhaust flange coupling. The aftermarket one did not fit as the exhaust studs were slightly narrower. The studs could be slightly bent, and I did not want to chance breaking off a stud trying to make a correction. The original part fit just fine.

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
Looks like a fun truck project. Seriously beautiful rollback, too. I was in Ely a couple of weeks ago. Had lunch at the Chocolate Moose. I grew up in southern Minnesota (Austin). When we were kids my parents would always take us "up north" to Ely for a week of camping at Fall Lake. You're so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area.

Thank you for the compliment on the rollback. I've been to Austin a couple of times...way back in time when I played NJCAA Basketball for Vermilion. Also, good times at Fall Lake for us too. Please visit Ely again! |
Re: Dumptruck Dolly
Preparing the back half of the exhaust, and will provide more pics soon.

Got back to the project...exhaust is coming along. I have to fab up one more hanger and I should be done. When I purchased the exhaust, it came with a turbo style muffler...and with how the layout was proceeding, I noted I had much more room next to the driveshaft when using a glasspack I had from another project. I think the glasspack has a total of 150 miles on it before I put it on a shelf.

Exhaust is done...sounds mellow enough, but the test will really be when I get it on the open road...not sure when that will happen.
The electrical mess is the previous owners rear marker lights for when they hauled hay... |

It's nice to get the truck off the rack to see the new tires/wheels. An oil change is due. Then the next things on the list in no particular order are brake cylinder(s), accelerator pump for the carb, fuel tank check up/hook up and electrical checks/repairs.

Re: Dumptruck Dolly
Nice new project....your other trucks are pretty darn nice, too!

Starting to size up the dump box project. I'll have to move the '71 K20 chassis to get to the box and make measurements.
