Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Nice bender work. Do you plan some sort of insulator on the flex line near the lower link bar? In the pic it looks like it touches the bar. Maybe just the angle of the pic?

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Dang, good eye. When I first read this I assumed it was the camera angle, because I mocked this up and ran it through the travel without a problem. Sure enough, when I tightened the hose fitting, it spun and wound up the hose. Fixed it.... Next time I pull the wheels off, I'm going to bend the tab a bit. That should give it more relief on the angle.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9ed957db_c.jpg Moving on... I knew the holes on the brake pedal didn't line up, I've been procrastinating on fixing it. (4 years, haha). https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9c2d4cc5_c.jpg Got out the welder and turned it up to the big boy settings. Fill'er up. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ee928ea3_c.jpg After grinding, sanding, blasting, and powder coat. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...841a1743_c.jpg Installed. Temporary. The bracket will come back out for final paint. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...96cd44aa_c.jpg After that, I got wifey to come out and pump the pedal while I bled the brakes. So far NO LEAKS!!!! Brakes are done, crossed that off the list! |

gorgeous!

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
That's a nice strong looking pedal bracket. Did you make that or purchase it?
|
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Looking good. I’ll be using a bracket like that for my pedal. Thanks for the detailed pictures.

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
I made the bracket. In hindsight, I should have mounted the booster higher so the bracket doesn't hang down so low.
Didn't get much done today. I'm a few fittings short to do the fuel lines, so I started thinking about the exhaust. I welded the down pipes to the manifold flanges. I suck at TIG welding pipe. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6edd6849_c.jpg |
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Nothing to see here....
Except a new drive shaft! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...89e73c45_c.jpg |
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Fuel system, done.... Except for the EFI fitting that was missing it's o-rings. Waiting for Edelbrock to replace them. 3/8 NiCopp for the frame runs, and Russel Pro classic hose for the ends.

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
I see you’re using some notchhead holders. You like them? I was looking at them myself.
|
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
never seen a steering column connected to an exhaust manifold before. I gotta get out more I guess, haha
nice clean work. keep it up. love those pics too. it gets me inspired to work on mine between other jobs. maybe try to find a formed vac hose on the back of the engine, that way it won't rub the sheet metal. the fuel lines look great. |
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Jason, not worth the price. I couldn't use them on the line snaked through the frame, because there was not enough clearance to move the tube over the notchead to snap it in place. Had to use the p-clamps there.
dsraven, I will make brackets to mount the hoses to the transmission mount studs. Just haven't got a round-tuit. Oh, and I'm still waiting for o-rings from edelbrock. :cuss: |

looks nice!! how many coats did you end with and which spray gun?
|
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
4 coats with Tekna ProLite 1.4 tip. It sprays nothing like epoxy or primer. I moved too fast, causing lots of orange peel on the first couple coats. Slowed down for the last coat, and it filled in the peel. After I get the inside done, I'll test the cut and buff. If that doesn't get out the peel, then I'll sand with 800 and shoot 3 more.

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Update on painting. Short story, I switched to black base & clear coat, and re-painted the cab. I can't form an opinion on which is better. Base/clear, or single stage. I think the clear makes the black deeper and darker. Overall, I fought with dirt, dust and lint, and hope it will all cut/buff out. Everything from the cab forward is done, I haven't even unboxed the bed and fenders yet. Meanwhile, I will focus on getting it running before cut/buff and put the fenders on.
Radiator, and transmission plumbed. Serpentine belt installed. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8aa66403_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5dab889e_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...bfe0c9c7_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d17f68fa_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3a24ccd8_c.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b1d3373a_c.jpg |

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Any updates? quick question. which did you find easier to spray , single stage? bc/cc? Iam guessin you went with spi clear, which one to you go with and and was it to buff. still torn over hear on ss or bc/cc

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Slammed57, No updates. I had a little time before christmas to work on this mess.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fc02d3d1_c.jpg I used SPI black base, and SPI universal clear. For the long story version... When I did the single stage, there were some areas of heavy orange peel that removed too much material to sand out. I broke through to the primer. I called SPI and had a long conversation. He said I would have to respray vs. spotting in and blending the single stage. The rough areas were due to me (f'n novice) not getting the gun close enough. After a long conversation , his opinion is that base/clear is a better choice for novices. Therefore, I decided to start over with base/clear. Some of the reasons being that you can repair and denib the base coat until it is perfect. Black base is blacker due to the higher pigment load. Neither way is easier. I could not keep the dust and trash out of any coat. Therefore, there are a lot of imperfections. My overall opinion, universal clear was easier to spray than single stage. To get enough coverage to sand it out, I hammered on 5 coats. To my eye, base clear is blacker and has more depth with a 'wet' look, which I prefer. So far I have only cut and buff the cowl panel. Time consuming, but buffed easy. 1000-1500-2000-2500, trizact 3000-8000, sonax cutmax, sonax polish. It is a lot of steps! Either way, it is a LOT of work, and I'm considering sending the bed out for paint instead of doing it myself. To get back to SS vs. base/clear, IF I ever do it again, I will still do base/clear. I like the way it looks better than single stage. Hope this helps... |
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Just finished going through the thread... nice work!
I sent mine to the shop in 2013 where they got all the body and chassis work done and it's been in storage until last fall. Our end products are going to close to twins... :) Hoping to get it on the road in the spring. Ken |
