i know three guys in Nebraska with these crew cabs and one regular cab all put cummins diesels and 3/4 4 x4 drivetrains in them pretty cool and they would get a kick out of the crown vics running gear because they also derby and run the crown vics.

A lot of people think I just being "trendy" and going with the LS to be a "cool kid" instead of being more "unique" and going with a modern Hemi or a Cummins, now I will give the Hemi credit, it makes pretty good HP and pretty good Torque, the only problems are its pretty expensive and harder to find a used Hemi motor to buy and there a pretty large motor and probably more heavy then other motors. And the Cummins is great for pulling, towing, and hauling has good torque, but unless you do some modifications there still a diesel and diesels are meant for torque and not so much horsepower, horsepower can be achieved with a diesel but it take some parts, but the cummins is still a long heavy motor. The LS is one of the only modern motors that is relatively small in size, good HP, good torque, fairly light weight, and is fairly cheap and easy to find used or even rebuilt, it's perfect for cruising down the highway doing some hauling and towing, and getting decent mileage (especially since the dodge will be roughly 1600lbs lighter then the silverados that those LS motors have to pull around), that's why I'm recalling hearing towards the LS swap. What I also find funny is LS swap are a common swap, and although there has been sweptlines LS swapped, there's still very very few of them, the more common motors found in the sweptlines that I've been seeing is either the old school mopar sbc's, bbc's, new hemi's and cummins swaps. So in a way by putting an LS in my 65 I'm actual long doing a more uncommon "untrendy" swap haha

On a side note, I found avoid steel supply/welding shop today and I found a place that has a awesome selection of hardware, bought some 3/4-10-10 bolts but turns out the holes in the aluminum portion of the crossmember arent as big as the metal brackets from the coil over towers so ongoing to need to get 5/8-10-10 bolts instead, so when I go back to Merced. Hoping to ciut the steel I got today and get the frame welded back up fully and begin preparation for boxing and the bolting sections of the frame, I also did buy some weld thru primer so I don't have to worry about rust inside the boxed portion of the frame... More updates to come.

Well rounded up some stuff on Monday, managed to get the steering joint that connects to the ford rack from a Lincoln LS and I also got all 4 of the right bolts, they were much cheaper then I had anticipated. Also made some metal pieces from the cardboard templates I made and smas I started to weld those in I got to the last piece to complete the driver side rail and as I was getting everything in position to weld I hear the welder turn off..... And well I'm thinking it's pretty much dead, unless there's a fuse inside under a panel or something I'm pretty sure the circuit board or whatever it uses in there might be fried, I checked all connections, and I made sure the plug in in the wall was getting power and it didn't just pop the breaker. So as of right now progress on finishing the frame is to a halt. I did manage to weld those tabs on for the rear mounting points of the crossmember and primer the portion of the frame where the crossmember is with the weld thru primer. And I can still drill the holes in the frame for the front mounting points. So I'm going to see if I can take it to a buddies house and finish the welding there.

Enjoy seeing what you are doing there. I can still remember that truck. I used to own a
D200 short bed and when I saw yours years ago it brought back all kinds of memories. For my abilities back then, your truck was just too much to handle. Never could convince the wife to get another Dodge.
I still tease her with trying to get one, but she still won't let it happen.

I think it's very cool you remember the truck, I know when I first seen it I knew I could do something with it and I knew it was pretty well left for dead but I had a feeling I might still make it something eventually!


Well while most everyone was out smokin the Devils lettuce on Monday I managed to get some very pathetic small amount of work done on the crew cab. Figured since I can't finish the frame I might as well look for other things I can do since I'm also low i funds til my next paycheck.. So I started looking at the inner fender wells and ended up cutting both of them to fit the CV suspension. Not done with them yet this is just the 1st "stage" and after I got those in place and was satisfied I started looking at how the front driver door sags towards the rear door due to when the original door was bent and it pulled the "hinge pockets" in the door jamb causing the new door to still sag even with adjustment, so I pulled the hinges out and massaged the three morning points per hinge back into there original form. Upon removing the lower hinge I was down to the last lower bolt which gets submerged with water when it rains and dirt causing a lot of rust, so I knew I had to baby that one out and I managed to get it half way out but then it snapped on me :waah: so before the hinges and the door goes back on im going to have to pull that bolt out and I also want to clean the hinges up and the little pockets In the door jamb as well.. And then we'll see if that does the trick and gets that body line all lined up. Here's a shot of the passenger inner fender

I used to drive one of these at work on a Navy base back in the 80s. It had a 6 cylinder and 4 speed, and it was fun to drive. We took it all over the desert....Of course we didn't care if it got hurt, it was a government truck! I should have bought it when they auctioned it off.
Now I see one at work ( same base, wow I've been there too long...) that is jacked up, 4 wheel drive, looks pretty cool.
The coolest truck we had was a 65 chevy short step 4x4, I really liked that one......
anyway, I like your truck, and I will be watching this one!

That's pretty cool! If the truck left that much of an impression on you then I'm glad I chose to save this one and build it, I have a feeling it's going to be a fun truck when I'm done. I hope you enjoy the build! Well that is once I can start on it again after my welder dilemma haha

Forgot to post down that I got the rear view mirror installed. My cab for some reason didn't come with a mirror or even dimples to drill the holes so I had to mark dead center of the cab and drill them. Came out alright, it's nice and center of the windshield opening.

Also found a welder for $800 on craigslist, going to scrounge up the cash and go test it, if it's working good then I'll be back in business.

I know there's lots of scammers out there and that's one reason why I don't really want to buy a welder off of craigslist but this guy told me to come down to his house and I can use the welder and mess with it to see if I like it, so for that I have a little more trust in him. The welder is pretty nice, it's got its own cart and wheels just like my miller 200, this welder however has a longer power cord which will really help me. Haha gotta make sure there's something Chevy in the picture! Those dodge forums just absolutely love seeing a dodge in a c10 house :D .....not! Haha

Bought a police interceptor crown vic front sway bar and some parts that I'm missing from the tailgate: the driver side tailgate hinge and the upper passenger tailgate latch tab that I guess broke off of the bed at some point. Tomorrow I'm going to go to a junk yard and see if I can't get some more parts I'm missing

Oh no I have plenty of motivation to work on this truck, but lately I've been helping my friend who's been buying and selling squarebody trucks, so when I get the time and money I try to make some progress on this truck.

Managed to get a good passenger door glass from the junk yard, so I finally got all the parts together and greased up the window regulator and installed everything in the rear passenger door. The parts list is slowly going down!
My goal is to have at least all the door glass in by this winter so the interior of the cab doesn't get rained on. Around August im going to try and gather up some much needed tools; welder, air compressor, and a bead blast cabinet, would really allow me to get some real progress done to the truck.

As for the sway bar, turns out there's two holes (one on either frame rail) drilled in the frame from the factory that are perfect for the sway bar to mount to the frame, so all I had to do is drill two more holes. Here's a picture of the sway bar in

Also I've been doing a little body work I guess you could say, worked the dent in the driver fender behind the wheel some and managed to get almost all back out. I know the truck is just a old beat up patina'd work truck but I do want to get the body as straight as I can or at least straighten It up a little, and if the dent doesn't come all the way out perfect then it's okay it still ads to the character look. So here's the fender before

Well today I took the grille off and painted all the mounting tabs black, I think it looks nicer having them blend in with the radiator support, kinda gives the illusion that the grille is just "floating". I also removes a portion of the cowl to gain access to the dented area behind the hood on the drivers side, I drilled out the spot welds and then removed all the rust/paint from the panel and primered it with weld thru primer. Also got all the surface rust out of that inner portion of the cab and then primed it with the weld thru primer as well. Removing that panel also helps me cut out a portion of the upper kick panel where one of the E-brake handle mounted and the mount (along with the hole) busted/broke off, so I'll cut that out and make a patch panel to weld in before the panel gets welded back in.

Not 100% sure about that, I am however going to drill some drainage holes in that panel to help water drain out of there. Studying the construction of this sweptline I can definitely see they didn't think about holes to drain water from panels... But I'm planning to help that.

With my old '70 D200, that area was completely rusted out (gone). Due to being only 15 at the time, I used whatever I could to make that area secure, water/salt proof and strong. I ended up encapsulating that whole area with fiberglass boat cloth and fiberglass resin. Worked fantastic.
That truck had been used by Lobstermen to haul boat/traps and such out of saltwater it whole life. The bottom half of the truck was completed rusted out. My truck probably should never put back on the road, but try to tell that to a 15 year old with an imagination and a desire to make it happen. LOL!

It's guys like you that are keeping more classics on the road! It takes a lot of patience and dedication to take a vehicle that's half trash and bring it back instead of getting one with a lot of potential!

As for news on the truck, yesterday I got a LH and RH door glass and both the port windows for LH and RH front doors, so I decided to bust all the door components I have off the shelf and see what I could put together. Upon further inspection I noticed something I hadn't seen before.... The drivers rear door window regulator has a crack and it's bent on the arm that comes off to the "pivot bar" (for lack of a better term) So I figured maybe I could bring it back to its original shape and weld it or somehow repair, so I tried to see if I could bend it back to its original form... It's not budging so I'm 50/50 with trying harder to repair it or trying to find another one. So the rear driver door is going to stay a she'll tell I get another window and figure that out. So I moved onto the front driver door, window regulator was good so I assembled the window/reguator all in the door and then I checked the condition of the int. door handle regulator... The splines on the end for the handle to attach are rusted and rounded pretty bad and I don't have the little clip that goes on the end of the rod to secure it to the door latch.. So couple steps forward and a couple steps back.

LOL! I think your onto something... This cars been fighting me tooth and nail, I Go to pull the motor (seized, with no heads or oil pan for the past 30 years) and naturally since I can't rotate the crank, I can't get all the torque converter bolts... So I pull the bell housing and torque converter with the block, no big deal right? Ha! Wrong! I go to take the bell housing off with all the bolts off and it's solid on the block... So I start looking deep inside the bellhousing and that's when I see a bolt going from the transmission side into the motor... And to make it even better the bolt is about 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches long and with only 1/2" of room before the head of the bolt makes contact with the torque converter which I still can't take off because the motor is solid! And there's some other things that aren't going smooth either... I think I'll call this car Christina!

Well it's been awhile and the dodge has been on the back burner as I currently have the 59 coronet, a 73 GMC, 79 GMC, my 67, my 59 buick and my 1970 taco 22 minibike as projects but I did finally get another welder. So to break in the welder I decided to weld on the passenger "tailgate latch tab" on, not sure if I updated the thread about my purchase on the missing tailgate piece so incase I didnt, I bought the missing trunion and the missing latch tab that had broken off before I got the truck. So long story short the tailgate is finally fully functional. So now that I have a working welder I will be able to make some much needed progress on my sweptline!

The 79 gmc is going to be gone after tomorrow, going to do an oil change, and tidy some things up and then it's ready to be driven. slowly but surely I'm finishing my friends projects while doing a little work to my own here an there. Sometimes it's not the best feeling but Ive always got something to work on! lol
