Yeah there's about 15 or so squares in there. Some good doors too, not sure if original though. PM me and I'll tell ya where.

Re: 1977 K10 Silverado Longbox
mike, you will need the 100" speedometer cable. pepboys, oriley and autozone are all like $13-15 and they will probably have to order them. rockauto has them for like $9-11.

Re: 1977 K10 Silverado Longbox
Thanks Nate. That's what I got. Got it from Brothers off a gift card from Christmas. Worked real well and the hop went bye bye.

I used to love going to the junkyards before you had to sign in and in some cases pay. Was a lot more fun with older cars too......

OK! Back to it. Was on a short break for how do I say.. choosing my battles
Finally got the ol' girl to fit in the garage to beat the heat this summer. I have a nasty oil leak that is my current mission to stop. I went ahead and dropped the front drive shaft. I'll clean paint and re-u-joint it. Also drained all fluids and will drop the tranny and oil pans to re gasket. I also plan to replace the crapped out t-case mounts with poly. Re: 1977 K10 Silverado Longbox
Nice build. Makes me wish I would have went ahead and built up a little 4wd play toy on the 77' K10 short bed frame I had. If you are ever in the Eastern part of the state around Edenton, you need to look in a my buddy AJ's Uncle Hoghead. He had about (6-8) round eyes in his personal junk yard behind his shop. He builds all of the motors in that area as well.

She's a tight fit in there isn't she....geez. Don't worry mine would be a tight fit as well.....And mines a short wheelbase...lol.

Pulled the oil pump off and it was filled with plastic bits. Either the pump shaft sleeve came apart or the gear on the cam is failing.. Either way I cleaned out the pump and soaked it in carb cleaner. It will go back in for now and be replaced when I do the engine rebuild next year.

Re: 1977 K10 Silverado Longbox
Those ittty bits are your cam gears failing. Going to want to swap that very soon.
|
Re: 1977 K10 Silverado Longbox
The cam gear is steel and the driven gear on the distributor is plastic right? If the plastic gear fails completely, you lose oil pressure, but the distributor stops too, so you would loose power immediately (ie engine shuts down) as soon as the gear fails, and therefore there is no danger of running without oil pressure.
But that looks like an awful lot of plastic for that one tiny gear. Must be holding on by a thread. Sorry to hear about the battle. In one myself, and losing. Likely leading me to a divorce now. |
Re: 1977 K10 Silverado Longbox
I just put a new motor in mine, 35 pounds of compression on 2 cylinders  I got a GM GoodWrench 350 for 1509$ shipped to my door from Summit. Good deal for a daily driver motor :smoke:

Re: 1977 K10 Silverado Longbox
This is a factory timing chain setup. The cam gear is lined with plastic. Supposed to make them quieter or something. And crashz, that is the only bit of plastic in the timing system. Both the distributor drive on the cam, and distributor gear are metal.

Thanks for the info dudes. Anyone know about the stamping in the block and rods?

Re: 1977 K10 Silverado Longbox
Years ago the timing gear cam gear broke apart on my 400. The were the plastic like gears. I replaced the timing gears and chain with steel and never looked back.

I made a phone call to the PO and he enlightened me that the timing gear had been replaced.. Probably due to the plastic one failing. That being said, i feel good to run the motor for another year to keep on my financial schedule and that the tid-bits were never scooped out when it did fail. #NEXT

Are you going to do the rear main seal since your in as far as you are now? Only takes another 5 minutes.

Enaberif, I guess so.. I'm not sure how to do it. I guess You Tube will show me.

Gettin' there Rusty76.
Here's where I'm at. Found the rear main seal and now know how to tackle it. Also I see that the oil pump shaft plastic sheath was busted. I now know that the bits in the oil pickup screen were from the old timing gear as I thought. Should be popping in the new seals this weekend. I will say that it pisses me off to no end not to be able to pull this puppy now and clean it up.. In due time I reckon. Attachment 1400065 Attachment 1400066 Attachment 1400067 |

Got the oil pan on last night. The little blue pin ups they provide with the Fel-pro one piece gasket are the tits! Jacked up on the front cross support to get a little more access and I guess this is what a 2.5 inch lift would do in the front..:metal:

Looks like you had fun with the pan. Hopefully the timing chain cover to pan seal will seal up well. I had a heck of a time with mine when the timing chain let go years ago. Looking good.
