1971Stepside, can you post a picture or 2 of your drivers side? I ended up sliding the engine all the way back(engine mount sliders) and its better but still just barely is hitting the top of the clamshell mount. Problem is it touches the metal right above the bolt/nut so if I clearance the clamshell then the nylock nut I'm afraid would melt....

I did the same and used an f body camaro oil pan. the pan barely clears the crossmember but it clears!! header long tubes fit well but the same closeness to the block as the rest of you. no gaskets yet though!

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

Here is what I am talking about. It won't matter if my engine mounts are in the front holes or rear holes, it has to do with the sliders and the clamshell mounts and their location.

I slid my engine back in the adapters as far as it goes(2" sliders) and its just barely hitting the clamshell. I'm just holding the headers up so they aren't perfect but you get the idea. I can't modify the clamshell because the lock-nut is directly below the area the header is touching and i'm afraid the heat will melt the nylon in the nut after a good heat soak. I also want to wrap the headers in heat wrap so I need room to do that too. So I guess I am going to have to clearance the front tube a little to make this work.... I just hate doing this if I didn't have to...

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

I would just clearance the clam shells, just grind slow and should be just fine. if you're worried about the nylon nuts just take them out before you do it.

Actually I'm worried about the header heat when engine running during driving melting the nylon nylocks rather than the grinding process. If I clearance out the clamshell top shelf the header will definitely fit, but it will be about 3/16" away from the top of that nylock nut.

Thoughts? Not sure header wrap will clear 3/16" gap, it will be touching yeah?

Don't forget to check clearance from your bell housing as well. I had to trim a bit of my bell where the starter bolts up. Scorpion LS shorties SP16-5077CC.

I see what you're saying. What brand sliders are you using?

My adapter plates were bought off Ebay. No slide but 4 different positions. I used CPP mounts.

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

Use a mechanically locking nut instead of the nylock, problem solved. They are very slightly ovaled so that they don’t back off

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

I'm wondering if you can rotate the mount so the clamshell is more towards the bottom of it?

Uh, what are these, you have a name or a picture cuz this sounds like a great idea!

Explain this, how can I rotate the clamshell? I have sliders and mounts kit from performance online.

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

You could put the bolt in from the other way or just use an all steel lock nut. Fantenal calls them top loc nuts.

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

Boom. Found em. Distorted thread locknut.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dist...thread_locknut

And I also found the Fastenal brand top lock nut.

I will get one of these and replace the nylock nut. I've used these before now that I'm setting them... And as for putting the bolt in the other way that is out of the question as the adapter plates are right up next to the block and these bolts come from the backside so can't switch them like that. I should be able to clearance a small amount of that clamshell top plate and use the top lock nut. Thanks guys, I will report back here and on my build thread when I get this completed.

These headers fit great. I had to slide the engine back an inch for them to clear the frame but they fit great everywhere else.

Which ones are you using? The long tubes, mid length or the shorties?

Im using the long tubes with 1 7/8 primarys. They fit better than the old longtubes that were on the 283 when I got the truck. I will try to get a picture under neath to show how far they hang down.

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

Here is what I ended up clearancing. Now you can see that nylock nut underneath and why I was worried about the heat melting it. But I still plan to get one of those all metal Top Lock Nuts.

I think this is going to work just fine :smoke:

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

Can anyone say how much louder these headers are vs. manifolds? I've got LTs on my other car and they kind of drone, which is cool at first but not so much on longer trips.

Was looking through here and didtnt see my exact combonation of a 71 with a 5.3, speed engineering shorties, CPP mounts and clamshells. I have the multi position dirty dingo plates, not the sliders. Anybody with this combo ?

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

I think I am getting a set of the 1 7/8. Seems they could put a v band on the collector and it probably could solve a lot of shipping issues and make us all happier. They are cheap enough to add a few bucks to the price for the peace of mind. I've got the f body setup with a T56. It's all in mock up right now. Anyone running this setup yet?

I'm using them on my K10 swap which is currently in process. I bought the shortie version (25-1021) because I have a 4WD crossmember to contend with. These will give me more room to work my exhaust around/through. I also decided to send them out for ceramic coating.

The spark plug clearance looks pretty good on the drivers side. How about the passenger side?

Any chance anyone has used the 1 7/8" long tubes with a No Limit rack and pinion?

Bought the shorty version for around $200. Fit great , but have to trim passenger side ear off th 400

My Vortec 5.3 is on a run stand and has 2001 Camaro LS1 manifolds. They hug the block nicely.
I intend to keep a manual tranny and from the looks of things these manifolds will interfere with a hydraulic clutch slave.
So I want to know if maybe these Speed Engineering headers will give me more room. I know they will fit nicely between the frame rails of my 65 C10.
Anyone willing to make a few measurements?

I have the long tubes and there’s no clearance for a Novak external slave.
Not a great pic, but it kind of shows the lack of room.

Lugnutz65 06-08-2020 09:25 AM

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

Thanks. I’m thinking the shorty headers turn down sooner but that’s the clearance info I need. I’m sure others have mated Tremec trannies. I just need to see their setup. I don’t think a Novak setup will work for me either.

jjzepplin 06-08-2020 03:44 PM

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

My 99 Fbody manifolds would not fit my 72 Blazer. I got the 1 3/4" long tubes and the passenger side needed the frame massaged a bit to fit right. I just bent the frame up a bit. I am mating the T56 to it and other than that the headers seem to be a pretty good fit. I am however planning on using the original F body Master cylinder which if I am correct would be in a totally out of the way spot. I am still mocking everything up at this point.

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

If header to clutch slave cylinder clearence is an issue, you can always change to a hydraulic release bearing.

got a brand new set in the box that i won't be using due to the fact that you have to cut the "ears" off a 4L80e to run them.

I’m going to use an internal slave. Check out gringoloco’s build. He’s running a TKO with an internal slave.

I know this is an old post but I’m wondering how they have held up or if there is a better brand that won’t break the bank for an 65 c10 with a 700r4 2 wd that doesn’t hang way down below the frame...

Acregger 12-26-2020 09:34 AM

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

Sorry cant help with how long they will hold up but I have to say they are pretty well built and do fit very nice for the price. So far I am happy with them

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

I've had them on my 68 C10 LS swap for 3 years with zero issues. As much as I hate China made stuff I just couldn't see spending $800-$1200 for US made. My LS is a small cam LS1 so not huge horse power. If I was running a big HP engine I would not buy the Speed Engineering headers. The best designed headers have the longest gradual turn down after the exhaust port. If you look at the SE header design they take a tight bend after the exhaust port.

Re: Speed Engineering LS Swap Headers Findings

Has anyone used their mid length? Trying to decide between mid length and long tube. See lots of information on the Shorty and Long but doesn’t seem to be much info on the mid length.
