God that looks good. It shows you've been doing glass work for a while.

And btw, why don't ya go ahead and load up that big metal table of yours and give it to me. Man I need to get one of those!!! I really look forward to seeing this in one color.

Sorry, I missed this somehow. I think you mean how the flat metal attaches to the rod? It gets filled with your bead. Then when sanded down it looks like it was stamped.

Actually, this is the second time using the stuff after my fist attempt at the console (not counting the MDF attemp which is fubar now) unfortunately, I have a lot more to do. I got a plan for the area behind the seats. That bench leaves my shop over my dead body. I found another goodie at work I am going to bring home to set my cab on.

Nebdrummer,
I will trade you the bench for a paint job. I will throw in the red quad also. Lol. Otherwise, over my dead body. Haha

Lol nice score on it regardless. I can't paint! I can do everything up to it though! Lol. After my pickup, I have way to many things I need to get done that aren't auto related its sick.

Top notch mister. Keep it up! You going to back to the 50s this year? You're a canook, so it shouldn't be that far of a drive right?

NP at all. I wondered if my explanation would be confusing. I understand the finishing where the side pieces attach to the 3/8" rod but it's the front curved piece I'm curious about. It would be welded to the 3/8" rods from behind. How are you creating the radius transition from the rods to the front sheet metal piece? I hope I'm explaining it so you understand what I'm talking about.

You mean this curve right? The plate is welded from behind and then finished with a tig on the outside. (I'm doing that later). It is really very easy to make one of these.

Yes that curve. The piece you added to the bottom of the stake pocket. I edited your picture to show you the area I curious about. The blue arrow pionts to the radius I am wondering how you filled it. Do you follow me? Any closer up pictures of that bottom curve?

Maybe this picture is clearer. The yellow arrow points to the area where I am wondering how you filled this in and radius it to match the factory contour.

Yes that is how I do it. Finish it with a tig and then use one if these with a carbide pointed bit. Makes short work of it. Then sand it with 220 after.

Thanks Wade. I appreciate it. If you had any more close up shots of that area kicking around on your pc, please post them. If not, no problem.

That Makita is one of my favourite tools. Lots of power. And great for fine grinding. I don't have any close ups, but I have not finished them totally yet. Have a bunch of tig work to do and I like to do it all at once.

SSABMUD -

Great job on the console. I like how you blended old with new (cup holder and lid) a lot of times it looks mis match but yours looks like it came that way. I'm in the process of building my center console out of MDF. I am also working on the back cab area that you made reference to. It was a challenge in the corners with the compound curves.

Looking good my man.

Re: My 1952 truck.

Thanks Marc. I will say that it was gratifying smashing the MDF console I made into a million pieces. Me and wood have never got along. I am going to take a few days off of the truck and figure out where all my stereo stuff is going and how I want to do the back panel. If yours turns out like the rest of your truck, I'm sure to be jealous.

SSABMUD, great job on the console. I thought with your metal working skills you would have done it in metal. I have not worked with fiberglass in awhile, what a mess! Keep up the great work.

Re: My 1952 truck.

I did build it out of metal the first time but switched to MDF, then fibreglass to make my future plans easier to do (yeah right). It just makes such a damn mess and I am still blowing out fibreglass boogers. Winter is thinking about ending soon so there will be lots of outside sanding soon.

I was *this close* to doing some pressure washing outside on Sunday, but we got a fair bit of snow, so I decided to spend the day plowing driveways with the Atv instead. Someday we'll be able to get back to the great outdoors...

I have a lot more work to do back here. Have to put the seats in and see how much moulding and shaping I can do and still have clearance.

SSABMUD, looks great. When you get that all done you can come down and we can do the inside of my panel. I want to do custom door panels and kick panels with speakers out of glass or at least the sculpted part. Great job.

Re: My 1952 truck.

I don't think I want to see fibreglass again after this is done. I do think this will be far easier than the console was to do. Frame is looking mighty fine Shannon. What spring rates did you use? I need to order shocks soon.

Re: My 1952 truck.

SSABMUD, all come on! HAHA Thank you on the frame. They are alden shocks and were supplied with the front end kit. I used them in the back that way they will all be the same. I will have to check on the spring rate. They had pink and white markings on them. I figured I would get everything transfered and see how they are. Then order another set with the right spring rate or the same.

Re: My 1952 truck.

SSABMUD-

You make it look sooooo easy. I worked on my MDF versions this weeekend. I will have MDF back with a fiberglass front. I worked on mounting my speaker rings before I attache material and cover with resin.

It would of helped to see your idea first.

What did you use for the backing (form for the fiberglass) more specificially to form the curved corners?

Looking good.

Marc

Marc,
I used an unhinged piano hinge to hold the glass cloth at the top, cut the bottom curve shapes out of foam, and then held it tight with a piece of 1/4" flat bar and weights. Next step is speaker rings and moulding it to blend with my console which is tricky because it needs to be removable. This actually was easy! The hard parts are yet to come.

Well that method was an epic fail. Do not do it that way. I made a fibreglass football out of that one and am now doing it in foam like I should have in the first place. I have to learn the hard way. :waah:

Yeah too much movement that way, but like Oscar Goldman said "we will build him better, faster, and stronger". The foam is awesome once again. I almost have it glassed up right now.

Second time was much better. Just enough glass on there for it hold its shape so I can take it out and work on it. Not a lot of fun trying to crawl around in that little cab.
