Looks good. I did something similar with the heater control on my Vintage Air set up. Looks much cleaner this way.

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
BBPanel, That's a tight squeeze to run the hoses that way. I have the unit that has defrost ducts out the back. So, it would not have worked for me.
|
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Yeah, I went with the Vapir 3 - all ducts go out the top or forward. Then I mounted unit as close to firewall as possible and still get 4 hoses down the back side. The clearances are tight enough I used a spacer on the bulkhead on the front of firewall just to get another 3/8" inside for the fittings. There isn't much room in these trucks regardless of which units are used.

https://relicate.com/collections/ger...et-honey-brown But, I wasn't ready to spend $140/yard. I found this at Lowe's 6'x'12' for $18! I don't know how I'm going to finish the edges. This was more or less a cheap shot to temporarily throw something on the floor. Quote:

Thanks for all the comments. It is encouraging to keep going and get'er done. After 8 years, I've had enough. I just want to get this thing mostly done. (It will never be finished) I promised wifey that this would be the year we will take it out for dinner on her Birthday. That's less than 2 months away! |
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Don’t know if you have access to a sewing machine, but this shows how carpet edge binding is normally done.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vbPLrzq9NMM One thing I do that they didn’t show is after the first stitching on top is done, I flip it over and use a little 3M super 90 to hold the vinyl / leather to the back of the carpet so it’s not shifting around and good and tight when the second row of stitching goes in. I’ve also considered welding up angle iron to fit the top of the step that will hold the carpet in place. Could be powder coated or vinyl wrapped. |
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Thanks for the tip. That looks easier than another method I watched. I have thought about using the glue-on instabind. However, there is only one shade of gray, and I don't think it will match.
One problem I found with industrial carpet is that the backing sheds a very sandy grit of material. I would be concerned if that sand finds its way into the sewing machine and damages it. I have thought about sewing my own seat cover. At this point, I don't need to learn another hobby, and I don't want it to look like an amateur made it. For now, I have no idea what I'm going to do for a seat cover. |
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Excellent work. Im jealous of your sheet metal skills.

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
I know that you mean about the cost of German square weave. I had to purchase 5 yrds of it for my suburban. I didn't finished my edges either. It is not supper noticeable because they terminate under the door sill trim on the sides. I did have my upholstery guy (the one that did my seats) make me some custom floor mats so it doesn't look too bad.

Thanks for all the comments! Still working out lots of little issues, but at least it's usable. It has a cooling issue, that doesn't make sense. I have a 2 speed fan wired with relays per the instructions on lt1swap.com. It works great, until it doesn't... The low fan logic has blown out 2 relays and one fuse. I have tested the logic multiple times by grounding the leads to fan1 and fan2, like the computer does. When cruising with good airflow, the water temp (reading from the ECM) cycles between 200-210. Somewhere in that range, the computer turns on the low fan. I have no idea what temperature the computer turns on the high fan, or if it is even programmed to do so. Anyway, once the relay "blows", it starts cycling like a turn signal, and the water temp runs up to 225+ and I shut 'er down. Long story, after getting home and sitting all evening, there's a big puddle of coolant on the garage floor. I haven't investigated yet. It looks unrelated to the fan issue. Possibly a heater hose or the coolant overflow can. |
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
The coolant leak turned out to be a heater hose clamp that never got tightened.
:o Swapped in another relay, different brand this time. Going for another test run. |
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Very, very nice. Way to go. Love it.

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Thanks!
I think the cooling problem is computer related. Somewhere in the 210 temp range it cant make up it's mind to run fan LO or fan HI. The cycling causes the relays to overheat. When I pull out the relay, it is SO HOT that I can't touch the prongs. Looks like I'm going to have to find a local tuner to take a look at it. Problem 2 could be a stuck thermostat. Since this engine had been sitting for 13 years, I put in a new 187 thermostat before getting it running. The new thermostat housing leaked on the first fill, so I glued it on with "The Right Stuff". I wonder if some got into the thermostat and glued it shut. :( When the engine temp is showing 210, the infrared thermometer shows the top of the radiator to be 200 degrees, and the bottom is only 130. Anyway, it's going to be a while before I can troubleshoot it. |

Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
The LS engines run at 210* normally. Your radiator is doing its job cooling .
Now as for the fan cycling you can adjust the on and off temperature for both fans with a tuner via the under dash diagnostic port . If the relays are getting to hot it could mean the fans are pulling too much amps. |
Re: The Vandal. 1957 "Big glass" 3100 restomod.
Check out the pirate 4x4 site for bella vista's write up on the ls cooling system and how it works. You cant think like the old school systems with an ls engine.
I would do an amp draw test on the motors if the relays are getting hot. |
