what did you use for speakers
 

looking for ideas and examples of what you did for speakers and where did you put them. Not a lot of room in the 68 cab. Kick panels are the easiest sounding with brake and dimmer adj. but was interested in anything different. checked formum and some there but looking for more. Anyone not happy with kickpanel that come with speakers? Buy the panels add the speakers.

The general consensus on the board about the panels that you buy and put your speakers into is that you can't easily find a lot of speakers that fit. They have to be shallow mount 6-1/2"s. I also was going to have a problem with them clearing my e-brake. 1968 e-brake is under the dash though, right?

I have 2 NICE 6x9's under the seat and 2 6-1/2"s in some custom made kick panel pods.
You can find info for making your own kick panel pods in the FAQ (in my signature).
I also have the ones I made to print out a template for. They print out on 11x17 paper.

I mounted 6" speakers in the panel just below the rear window and right beside the seat ends on my 72 Chevy 4X4.

I am going to install 4 X 6 speakers in the rear pillars of the 68 cab that I have and build forms for the 4 X 6 speakers to allow them to set in the dash behind the padded cover. Right now it has no glass or inner liners in it.

I've got two 6x9's in the driver side door (haven't had time to do the passenger side yet) with some plastic covers behind them. The cover's really kill the bass response though. It won't be an issue though because I've got two twelve inch subs going in under the seat. I really like the way the 6x9's look and they really bring out the mid to upper range of the spectrum.

I would, if I still had the truck. I sold many years ago. At the time( in the mid seventies), that I owned it, I had high back bucket seats in it, from a mid seventies Mustang and a center pedestal seat to make it a 3-way bench. The panel that is just below the window is real close to the size of a 6" speaker, and I cut it out to fit the speaker just between the seat back and the rear pillar. The panel is not overly deep, so the speaker does not need to have a large magnet on it. I also had 6" X 9" speakers in the lower door panels for a mid bass effect. If you remove the fuel tank from the cab, then there are many possibilites.

However, there are many upgrades to speakers on the market today and the sizes are smaller and more efficient. You can get a 4"X6" or a 5 1/2" round speaker that will fit the panel size much better. It does put the sound right at your ear and makes it more efficient on a truck with the windows down.

As I said, my present 68 Chevy truck project will have a 4"X6" speaker (just like what is in the early Nineties Chevy trucks mounted in the rear pillars (between the door frame and the rear window) and it will give the same effect as the later model trucks. There is plenty of room behind the pillar for a good magnet speaker and the sound reproduction should be good.

I bought the prefabbed plastic panels a few years ago and I agree with the general opinion of them, they're not that great. It's kind of one of those things where they work and get the job done, but there's a lot left to be desired from them. I mounted 6.5 inch speakers in mine and I had to round the hole in the panel out to fit them in and then the panels were too shallow. Among those issues I also had to do some modifications just to get them to fit into the actual kick panel.

If I were to do it all over again (which I might sometime soon) I'd go the route of trying to make my own panels like what Orange posted.

I am doing a frame mount fuel cell so I will put 2 12s behind the seat in my 67 and I plan on making a custom center console with a set of componants and mount the tweets in pods I will make on the dash.

You can also make a false glove box that only has a face and mount a small sub or a 4" speaker there and behind the guages firing down.

Don't forget to consider using a filler piece at the bottom, inside the pillar to close up the open area under the sheetmetal at the height just behind the door latch. This will give a fuller (less tinney) sound and make your speakers sound many times better. I would also look at blending into the dash a set of component speakers (tweeters and mid range combo) to get the frontal image effect.

The panels that fit onto the kick panels is a JOKE at best. They do not provide for enough backspace for a good sound and are usually in the way when you put your feet down there. Either open up the door bottom to a pair of 6 X 9 speakers or build a pod to mount to the door and put a decent 8" speaker there. I put a set of 8" speakers on my 84 GMC doors with 6" speakers in the middle of the door and a small tweet at the top of the door, It can be done.

I am following some of what Icesickl is doing with the 68, I am going to put in a sub box/console combo in my truck for a base effect. I am looking at an Isobaric design for a tight sound. There will be a front image, a back fill, and the base box for my system when I am done.

I reckon i did the redneck way but i used house speakers the kind with multiple speakers in the same box...you have to make sure they fit with enough cleareance you can adjust the seat still but that with a new speaker in the center sah and the xplod deck was plenty loud for my needs

Currently in process, but am mounting two 12" subs behind the seats where the tank was, 6X9's in the door bottoms and will add supertweeters near the A-columns or below the wing windows. Undecided on 4.5"s in the kick panels.

I have the ones in the kick panels, and two behind the seat. They fit because the fuel tank in between the frame rails. here is the website. It is a good set up.

Yet another option. One I will be using myself. Old Dog Street Rods has a set of speaker pods w/map pockets that mounts to the doors. They are completely aftermarket, and universal. I'm actually ordering mine today, so I can't say yet how they actually look. I'll know more next week some time, when they arrive. I'll also be enclosing the rear pillars on my truck, and installing some speakers there as well. Not to mention the Sub box I'm building, and some tweeters up front (location yet to be determined). My main problem is figuring out where to ount all the amps and crossover. But i'm sure that'll work itself out too.

never seen one of them before, it looks pretty cool and its only 3 3/8" high it should fit under the seat.

I have 2 6x9s in boxes and a 6" (I think) tube woofer all under the seat. I'm using a Custom Autosound deck that I can hook MP3 into and an amp driving it all. Sounds really good!
