Hi I'm new to this whole forum thing but having a difficult time on debating on the u-bolts for my 70 c10 a few weeks ago I got pulled over by a stater for ride height clearance on 3in lowering blocks and went and got some springs from Chevy metal in Vancouver Wa that are 4in dropped I went out and picked up some stock u-bolts wondering if they would work for those springs now that the 3in blocks and u-bolts have to go or do I need to go pick up some different ones to work any advice

Stock u-bolts should work if you are losing the blocks.

What size wheels are you running? A 3" block is a lot. If you have 15" wheels there is a good chance that a flat tire would have had you bottoming out with the u-bolts ends. That doesn't really matter anymore though.

coil springs have nothing whatsoever to do with ubolts of any kind

So are you losing the blocks in favor of the springs? If not why not just buy 6in springs

Yes I'm getting rid of the blocks hmm 6in blocks I'm going look in to getting some but that also means changing the Trac arm and relocating shocks in which I'm not to familiar on how to relocate the shocks

You can't do a 6" block. OARNGESI was talking 6" springs. No matter if you drop it 4" or 6" in the rear, you will need to relocate the shocks and change the panhard bar. That is if you want your shocks to function properly and the truck to track right. It's not difficult to do. I did it to my 67 panel and you can see how in my 67 panel project page in my website. Move to Arizona or Texas. They won't bother you for too low or too high (if you have flaps). We'd love to have another truck out here.

You need minimum 3" on cars and trucks from the lowest part of the vehicle to the ground where it is smooth and level to be legal. And a minimum 1.5" on motorcycles. If you are within that limit, you might want to call him out!

I think the ride height clearance problem was the fact when you use 3 inch blocks something is going to hit the ground if you get a flat. I have two inch blocks with shock relocaters and if I get a flat Ill be banging those mounts on the ground. Ill have to change it up back there.

Well now with the info and advice you guys are giving me is awesome and I definitely think the 3in blocks aren't the greatest on the truck so I'm hoping to 5in springs will work out great but now that I've done some homework on the relocation of shocks and panbar still a lititle nervous on the diy

In terms of DIY jobs this one is going to be pretty easy. No parts to go flying off and kill you.

The last time I did rear springs I jacked it up, put two jackstands on each side holding the frame (I always like to use a pair of jackstands AND the jack to hold it up, or two sets of jackstands). Then drop the rear with the jack until it's resting on the springs, leave the jack under the rear holding it up. Each spring has one bolt holding it in. Take it off (or cut if off if necessary). Put new spring on. Cut old u-bolts off, take blocks out, put new u-bolts on.
It really is a fairly simple job. I can almost guarantee you that getting the bolts off is going to be the hardest part of the job. Be prepared to cut them off.
Shock relocaters and panhard bar are about the same as far ass difficulty goes.

In all reality you can make the blocks a project. Finish that and if you have time that day tackle the springs. Finish that and move to the shock relocators, finish that and move to the panhard bar. As long as you complete each one, you can drive it at any time in that process.

Sounds pretty easy now that it's been explained I'm going to have try to order parts Monday and hope I'll have everything to do it Friday

Ive never heard of that law. Might be that way in your State tho. Normally nothing can hang lower than the rim. Incase you blow a tire, your frame and control arms and u-bolts wont hit the ground. You can run a 25 series tire and be SUPER low and still legal in most States and Canada.

That's what it is here in Texas. Scrub line. Nothing can hang below the bottom of the wheel rim. There is no magic number as to how low something can be otherwise.

When I got pulled over the officer said, "anything below the rim that will hit the ground in case of a blow out".
