Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
umm i dont think so, well i guess you would have to take your brakes back off when your ready to install yr new ones, but that will be a snap after you do this once it wont take long, are you gonna go ahead and replace your wheel cylinders while your at it, there only like 10 bucks each.

Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
The shoes are on backwards. The short lined shoe is the primary and goes to the front.
|
Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
EDIT... I missed this... this one was brought back from the dead. :D

Mr E, can you take a picture of the brackets you have there. I recently did this same install this past weekend (1st time I might add) but failed to get a shot from the bottom side of the brake system. If you can post a picture of the brackets I think we could walk you through it in a snap. As far as adding the e-brake after the drums are together, I think you are our of luck, unless you have extra small hands. |
Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
Here is the best drum brake assembly information on the planet...LOL
http://www.pbase.com/nufsed/drumbrake You can click on pics to make them bigger! I followed those instructions and I had not done a drum brake job in over 20 years....here's mine finished! http://lh6.ggpht.com/_2wzS50GoNjQ/SU...s%20%23100.jpg |

I am about to build the rear brakes on a 67 gmc c2500 3/4 ton. The rear brakes, nor emergency brake cables etc... do not exist on the truck so this thread has been very helpful. Thank you so much for posting the link to the "Brake Drum Assembly How to" it is for a 6 bolt hub but the setup is the same as the 8 bolt floating hub from what I can tell. |

Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
Can anyone get a photo of a 3/4 ton axle please. I can't seem to figure out why I mixed up the two brake struts and now I cant remember where they go besides at the top in between the brake shoes and under the wheel cylinders.
|
Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
Yep short linned shoe to the front
|
Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
the truck is facing right in the photo. This is a picture of the right side of the truck. See the emergency brake cable?
I screwed it up first because I was working on the drivers side and didn't think about the fact this pic could have been of the passenger side. |
Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
Does anyone know if all truck 12-bolts use the same shoes and such?
For example; does 63-72 all interchange or does the 73+ 12-bolt also interchange with the earlier 12-bolts? |
Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
Thank You guys. yall were alot of help

Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
I,am 99% sure all 12 bolt truck shoes are the same but I do know there are 2 different shoes and drums, 1 is h/d brakes other is std brakes.

Wow! A post that refuses to die. Been brought back from the dead five times. :c2:

Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
Lostmy65, also researching 12 bolt drum brake options, thinking of changing my 65 rear brakes to the newer 12 bolt heavy duty "JB 5" brake package. Just starting to see if it will work. Looks like the backing plates are different from earlier ones, offset to the center of truck to account for the wider brakes shoes. As notes here before by Keith Seymore, this is one of GM's really good brake systems, used as a design goal for trucks.
Any information/can it be done, on retrofitting rear JB 5 brakes to the early 12 bolt 2" brake shoe axles? Note: using '79 Dana 44 front axle, with the JB 5 brakes. I am planning to use the complete JB 5 brake system on '64 K10 build. Keeping all the original '64 parts so they could be retorfit later. Les |
Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
I have a 67 C-20 that im currently in the process of doing the rear shoes, pain in the butt, have not been done in id say 30 years, axles have to come off to remove hub and drum, pain in the butt, should have bought new wheel cylinders, went with rebuild kit, got one done, pain in the butt, lol, drums were surprisingly ok, but will replace oil seals and repack bearings did i mention its a pain in the butt.

Question: There's two different style springs for the nail heads, which one goes where? One is tapered in slightly, and is such a small difference that I wonder if it event matters? |
Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
the tapered one goes on front shoe

Towards shoe, on front shoe

Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
A good rule of thumb on the brake shoes was stuck in my mind by a High School auto shop teacher.
" Big in the back, like your girlfriend's Butt" I have never made a backwards mistake since I heard that. |
Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
6 times. Great thread thanks
|
Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
I know this thread is pretty old but the link to the pictures was a life saver for me. Been a long time since I have done drum brakes. Add to that the PO had the shoes reversed so who knows what all was wrong. Add to that like a DA I took both rear brakes off at once. Had ordered hardware kit thought I was ready to go, no not all springs come in a hardware kit. Wait on mail order for them. Long story longer, about 2 weeks goes by for this 69 year old and lets just say this thread saved the day and made quick work of the replacement parts. I know it's done right and my son will be safe. Thanks again for the info and pictures.

Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
7th time, at least!
Yeah, the sequence pics for assembly at the beginning was huge for me. Hadn't done this in quite a while, and I was missing that 3rd hand required for a lot of jobs. Everything is harder when you're doing it wrong!Lol! Lower spring and star adjuster together first, then mounting the forward shoe on first took care of most of my gravity challenges. Pretty straight forward from there... |
Re: ???Drum Brake Assembly???
So what would an 11" drums strut and lever look like? I have a 1967 fleet shortbox. I have been trying to find one online but idk if what I found will work or is right, even if the listing or parts are correct. The length of each would help too. I was told that 66 and earlier would not work with mine.
