1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
3 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, a few years ago, we bought a loaded 1980 Silverado swb 4x4 that had a nasty roll over. Anyway, we still had a few parts left over from it, and these door panels from it had these speaker pods in them that I have never seen before. The door panels on the back side look like they were done from factory, and so I was wondering if it was some sort of option. Thanks Trevor

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
I was actualy debating doing that to my truck. Wow, those do look clean and stock. What headunit was in it? just stock?
Probably not stock, but done clean enough to make it look that way. |
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
just the stock either 8 track player or am/fm I don't really remember it's been a couple of years.
|
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
what speaker size is it? like a 5x7 or something?
|
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
4 x 6" is what I believe these measure out to be. Trevor

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
Those are factory, and I am pretty sure they are unique to 1980 only.
|
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
I think it was an option for 79-80 only.
I have a set going in my 73. |
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?

My 80 has them as well :D

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
It's a one year only option for 1980.

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
The ONLY door speakers that were ever factory are those posted by the orig poster of this thread. Your speakers are not factory and installed by a PO.

Sorry those are aftermarket... pull them out and you'll see the rough cut edges. |

Trust me, they are not factory.
GM never put speakers in the bottom of the doors on these trucks. If you disagree, simply show us the information to back it up. It is OK if you have speakers down there, just don't confuse them with saying they are factory. |

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
Doesn't matter what doors are on your truck, the holes and the speakers that sit in them did not come from GM.
You more than likely will be the only person on this entire board who will disagree with this. |

The original owner probably had them installed at the dealer if they were Delco items . Still not original from the assembly line , but the Or Owner may have had it done on day one .

Anybody can buy AC Delco speakers from the GM parts counter and put them in the doors. Heck, GM even sold a 4x10 speaker kit for the rear cab corners that came with brackets, wiring, and all. The only factory installed door speakers are those picture in post #1...period. |

I am in the same boat as Jeff, 79-80 option only. |
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
The resident experts have spoken. I think it's unanomious that those were unique to late 79 and 80's only.
Different question. I saw a similar cut hole on the rear door panel of a Burb. Was that same speaker box used on Burbs rear doors? |
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
I think that would be pretty rare. Would be cool to have that option though.

Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
I will have to see if I can find it now. This was a pic of a door panel from a barn door Burb posted on this site recently. In the pic it showed the back side of the door panel with a cut out that looked exactly like the one pictured here.
I was just curious if those boxes might have been used elsewhere. You know, just in case someone was looking for some....;) |
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
I have 4 extra covers, but no extra mounting brackets.
I am currently restoring my set, and in the process if installing them on my door panels. |
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
Wow I learn more and more every day I come to this forum. One more question about these door panels. I see two hole's between the arm rest and the speaker. What are those holes for map pocket? or other type of storage compartment? or maybe they are just drilled by PO
Last question is the brushed aluminum inserts 77-80 only because I'm buying a 76 but I'm going to convert to pw pl and I saw a truck with brushed aluminum pw pl I know 76 door panels are different and pw pl werent offered untill 1977. |
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
Factory PW/PL were not offered in 73-76 because they would not fit in the doors, this is why the doors were changed in 77, to accomodate them. You might have problems on your 76, depending on what type of pw/pl you are going to install.
|
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
Can he use 77 and newer doors on his 76 though? I dont know how far along his body work is, but it might be benefical to swap doors now if you can, or look into an aftermarket kit if the stock power window setups wont work.
|
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
Jeff are you installing them on your 73? Hows that work with the difference in the door panels?
|
Re: 1980 Silverado- Door Panel Speaker option?
Just for more trivia, the Gentleman Jim's had speakers in the kick panels. Same speaker cover as the 80 door speakers, just vertical and in the kick panel. The metal of the cab was cut and there was a plastic cup behind them to seal.
Gentleman Jims had AM/FM 8 tracks. |

When I bought my 73 back in 95, both orig doors had lots of bondo along the bottom...I bought new GM 77+ doors because they were only like $170 each when the 73-76 doors were a astonishing (sarcasm!) $230 or so. was told by the GM parts guy the ONLY diff was the door panels...well I found out the hard way the insides were different too. Wish I could go back in time and get a do-over. I also bought a fender while I was there...$70! |
