CUCVs Off to Auction...

1 Attachment(s)
Snapped a pic of some surplus CUCVs being delivered to the DRMO for disposal. The truck in front had a couple Blazers but I wasn't fast enough. I remember being issued CUCVs and turning in our Dodge M880s. Hope they find a good home.

I missed out on an american army K5 about 8 years ago and I kick myself everytime I see one, they're sweet, and up here pretty rare

That's cool. Sometimes these surplus trucks are still in really good shape, and have next to no miles on them too.

Re: CUCVs Off to Auction...

Sadly these trucks will be cut up for drivetrain, then junked. Problem with these trucks is there are no options.

Not always. There are a few of us driving them around in stock condition with no problems. The ones that sell for $2500 and up on govliquidators.com are for driving not scrap. The GSA ones are more likely to be used and abused.
I had about 15 of these so far, 5 for parts, 10 for resale, one I use. Again, strong, stock trucks if you take care of them.

I dont know about you but i dont see a problem with pulling $2000 dollars worth of drivetrain out of a $1500 dollar truck....

I get what your saying, but i was just saying that happens because the trucks have no options. At least in my hood thats what happens

yeah or because the body just aint worth anything (one reason being no options, the other being beat up). Around here we like dana 60's and th400/np205's as much as we like 2.5 and 5 ton rockwells...

Re: CUCVs Off to Auction...

Sadly the people who get them think they got a gold mine and want an unrealistic amount of money for them. Just because they are ex military, does not really make them very special. I'd much more prefer an ex rural fire department 4x4. :)
They might all be low miles, and heavy duty, but they have no options and would be hard to do anything with other than make crawlers out of. Usually age is more of a killer than miles anyways, so I'd prefer some modern day things, like air conditioning.

Here for example is one in the federal surplus program that is NOT available to the public but IS to a municipality or fire dept. in the state of Pa. for $1750.
I would buy this in a heartbeat, take off the cap and use it as is.
These are great plow/work trucks as is.

That last one is clean. I set of those axles would make my dually to single wheel swap a lot easier!

Or you could just run the stock HMMWV wheels...

You have to register first
Most CUCVs require a EUC before you can pick up
Go to
http://www.steelsoldiers.com
You'll see how much fun we all have with GL and EUCs

I now wish I had NEVER seen that website.:smoke:

I just spent an hour wondering how my 70 k1500 would do if I tried to tow one of those 1008s from Maine to VA.

Reviving an old thread... I was going to wait until I actually took possession of the truck, but I am still waiting on the EUC to clear (61 days now).

I couldn't help myself. After seeing the trucks go into the disposal yard, I got to go in and check them out. I wanted one of the Blazers, but after looking at them, they were pretty much junk. I did fall for one of the pick-ups though, and won it when it came up for auction a few weeks later. It is in great condition and fired right up. All of the accessories work and it shifts into F&R with no issues. 38k miles on the 6 digit odometer. Only bad part is two small rust holes (both dime size) in each cab corner. No other rust issues at all and after dealing with the cancer on my 76, believe me, I looked. original price (in 1984) was $31k. I got it for 2k.

Nice looking truck! I bought one from an auction in Louisiana about a year ago. Yours looks alot cleaner than the one I bought. You are better off with a truck than a Blazer in my opinion. The Blazers seem to sell for just as much, if not more, money and you don't get the 1 ton axles.

Congrats on the purchase. I got lucky with my EUC, I got it in 14 calendar days. Now I'm waiting on my SF97 but that hasn't kept me from driving it daily, I just carry around a copy of the invoice. I'm loving mine, hope you get yours soon. Post up pics when you get it.

Well, you know... Hopefully it will make a decent part time driver after I get it cleaned up. I'll keep you posted...

Congrats on your CUCV. I bought one back in April, and I went today and picked a M101A2 trailer for it.

i know . its like the most important thing to some people . was out looking at new trucks with a buddy on saturday and he wouldnt even consider anything that didnt have heated and ac leather seats , dvd player and electric EVERTHING. what happened to having a truck for what they were made for , hauling and towing stuff ?
each to their own of course but to me just seems a lot of expense for a work vehicle

Re: CUCVs Off to Auction...

That is probably the biggest reason I don't have a new truck. I would be afraid to throw a load of bricks in the back of the thing.

To me a truck is what it primarily is; a truck. I take care of my 77, certainly put more into her than she will ever be worth but ultimately the reason I have her over a new Silverado or F150 is because I don't think that the 30 grand I would spend would get me a better product overall, especially for what this truck is used for. I drive her all the time, she gets ok mileage-not great but not really much worse than a new GMC. It isn't fancy but I can go to the dump or to Home Depot and not worry about some little scratch or ding causing her to lose a ton of value.

As for options, well there was a time when power steering, automatic transmissions and power brakes were considered a luxury. I do think that these trucks, as they are now, have enough creature comforts with cruise control and air conditioning. Heated seats are fine and all but my tushie is in jeans and it can handle the cold vinyl until it warms up.

I suppose it is all personal pref though.

Ive been spending a ton of time (and $!) on the truck, but it is almost road ready now. When I got the truck, I noticed it had a leak from the transmission that wasn't there when I inspected it. Turns out it had been driven or forklifted to a new location with a bent driveshaft and it cracked the tailhousing (check the pic...). I found a replacement and figured while I had it apart, I might as well put a Gear Vendors overdrive on it. New driveshaft, fluids, glowplugs, Optima batteries, belts and lines and the truck runs AWESOME! Starts on the first bump and the overdrive gets me to 70mph with low rpm. Still needs some work - new brakes and lines are sitting on the dining room table and a 2" suspension lift is on order from ORD. New tires after that, bodywork and paint when it gets warmer.

Re: CUCVs Off to Auction...

Yeah, that seems to be a GL problem. Though I didn't have this issue with my M1010 (bought via a MV dealer, not GL directly) my front steering dampner was crushed and you could see marks on the diff cover where someone used a fork lift to raise the front, likely to replace the front wheels/tires.

I so need to get a GV OD for mine!!! I just put 35" tires on so hopefully that will help a little but the GV is definitely coming. Talked to ORD this morning about some lift stuff too.

Boy, does that thing make some memories. I spend a more than a few days out in the field hanging out in the back of one of those crackerboxes. Between that, the Hummer ambulances and my trusty M113 I spend a lot of time in the field. I was a combat medic with several different combined arms units from 1987-1994.
