Not all at once now . Im serious i been working on this all weekend and have a limited budget. I really need some advice, I not used to chevy's I know toyotas and lexus. By trade. I could really use some help. I have to move tomorrow night, and have no running vehicle. I got a 84 celica with trashed crank, and my 78 c 10 Big ten 350 quadrajet if that helps. Its mechanical pump, And its craving life.

Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
How much gas is in the tank? Try pouring a little gas down the carb to help it get going. They can take a little while to prime if the lines are completely empty. Do you have someone to crank it over and keep it running while you are poring (tiny) bits of gas down the carb?

Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Tank switching valve. Located on the pasengers side, behind the fuel tank I believe.
Also, Try and give us more than 30mins before you say something about no one giving you an answer. |
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Oh yeah I was going to ask if you have dual tanks because that might be your problem.
|
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
I have one tank passenger side, Sorry its just me here, sadly i live in a city where i know no-one and. I feel like no-one knows how to turn a key. I got a bit impatient All the staring fluid fumes. And theres 3 gallons in the tank. Would be more but its a 4 mile walk to the gas station, and they only had a one gallon gas can. was alot of walking today. :chevy::uhmk::chevy:

Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Will it fire up at all with gas or starting fluid?
|
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
oh yeah till the can is empty. and it purs too
|
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
If you have all the lines hooked up to the sending unit correctly it should eventually get prime to the carb. If all else fails just run a rubber hose from the fuel pump down into a small gas can.

Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Single tank huh... hmmm... So nothing is getting to the carb at all?
|
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Nothing at all Makes me have a sad face. Its been a frustrating few days.I've replaced everything except the carb and fuel lines it seems. even that annoying pain to find lil hose of the filler. I worked on it tonight till i couldnt feel my toes anymore (due to the cold).
|
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Did you make sure to connect all the fuel lines on the sending unit and fuel pump correctly, and did you removed the push rod for the fuel pump when you replaced it?
|
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
wow 85 you have 663 posts still in pink, i got solicited after 30

Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Alright well im going to bed since you don't feel like answering simple questions when someone is trying to HALP you. ;)
|
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
push rod? i made sure it was in the up position if thats what you mean. made sure it was aligned when i tightened it down
|
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
but no i never removed the pushrod. i guess i did it the hard way and held it in place with a magnet
|
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
I'm at a total loss honestly. Other than the puchrod not moving at all, I can't think of anything else.
Can you smell fuel at all when trying to start it? |
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
i can smell starting fluid lol.
since i sealed the tank i dont smell any gasoline |
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
i no you said you changed the fuel filter but have you checked the little filter that is in the fuel inlet on the carb if you unbolt the fuel line from the carb there is a little filter in there that can get pluged up some times. if its the stock carburator un less this is the filter you changed i no a lot of these older trucks have a inline filter thats been added over the years.

ok are you getting fuel to that point?
|
Re: HALP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Do you have a vented gas cap on it?or is it totally sealed i think you got tyhe line ont eh tank backwards
|
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
I only have sealed tank, and i have the lines right, with one being the threaded and one being just hose and clamp you cant get it wrong. and the gas cap on it is ancient so i doubt that its sealed. but i tell ya if i blow into the tank from the fuel filter it blows back at me so im thinking i might need more gas in it. Considering im not getting the Capri Sun effect.
|
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
You maybe getting the Capri Sun effect but I fear you have a line with a hole in it. I had one do this to me and had to replace the line from the tank to the pump and the truck fired right up after the first shot of fuel down the carb.

I am also going to mention to you that while I can understand the fustration of not being able to make your truck run , particularly while on a deadline of any kind can be fustrating, comments like the above and the one about "not all at once" especially with the title of the thread makes those who do have knowledge to help you feel slighted and then they tend not to reply. As a member here who appears to have joined within the last month, i hope this constructive criticism helps you with your relations here, and as always should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to PM myself or any of the other staff here. |
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Now that ive taken care of site business, I am going to attempt to help with your issue on the truck.
Is it possible any of the fuel lines are jammed or bend so that fuel is impeded from reaching the pump or carb? On the tank are you sure that the pickup part of the float is sitting in gasoline. Ive run my tanks empty and there should only be a cup or so of gas i n there that doesnt get sucked into the fuel system. 3 gallons of gas should get you started and to the gas station a couple of times Next thing i think you need to check and re check is did you install the fuel pump correctly that the cam is moving the pump correctly? If you didnt the pump is n ot pumping and the gas wont reach the carb. If the truck is running on starting fluid it is definately fuel delivery related |
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
i agree the fuel line could be clogged between the tank and pump i have had this happen to me before when the engine wasn't getting fuel.
|
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
I'm just guessing the line in & out of the pump connected backwards or the pump itself has a bad diaphram.
|
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Place Vacuum gauge on the inlet side of your fuel pump. Turn the motor over a couple of times. You should have a vacuum reading. If no reading or it drops to zero the pump took a dump. While the fuel line is off the pump apply pressure to the fuel inlet to the tank (about 3psi or your tank will get real big, you don't want that). That will let you know that your fuel tank screen is good and your hoses are on the tank correctly. Be sure that your lines to the tank fit snugly because if the inlet line has an opening you will not get enough vacuum to pick up fuel. I don't know of the fuel and vapor lines can be reversed, but if you had the tank out???? I have had a new fuel filter not allow fuel into the carburator as it had a rubber check flap on it and it would not let the fuel by it.
Good luck and let us know what you find. |
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Had the same problem. Cracked fuel line off the tank. Changed it dumped gas and she fired right up.

Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
Hey budget our trucks almost would have been twinkies, Except mine had severe Fading and was well if you have seen the pics you will understand.
Ok to the topic at hand I blew into tank and it got big. I have a neighbor letting me use a airtank and nozzle to blow the lines out. and im going to get a aftermarket plastic bodied filter tomorrow, Make it easier to see. And along with that im going to try the gas can idea aswell. I cant wait to get this dang ole thing on the road. Side note if your in tulsa and needing door pins dont go to the orilleys on admiral..... The sooo sold me the wrong ones twice. Also once i get it running does anyone know a salvage that i could get the ducting for the heater? |
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
You think if i hooked a air compressor up and wrapped a rag around it put in fuel nozzel inlet and blew would it possibly prime aswell
|
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
or would it blow out the diaphram

That's my bet. I recently had a problem like that with the onboard generator on my RV. a small crack in the fuel line was keeping the fuel pump from being able to draw a vacume. Fixed that and it was golden. Disconnect each line and cap the end. Test the line to see if it holds vacume or if it leaks air. Idealy; use a vacume gauge but you can probably get away with a good old backyard suck on the line if you have to. There isn't much volume even in lng fuel lines so you can evacuate them and see if they stay that way pretty easily. WARNING -- do not skip the disconnect and cap part or you will get an unpleasent suprise! |
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
I know the gas tastes soooo yummy
|
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
You mentioned in your first post that you manually pumped the fuel pump with the line attached and it pumped fuel. At least thats the way I understood it. If thats the case then Id say your fuel pump cam lobe has been wiped out. Try an electric pump in line that may fix your issue. They can be had at any parts store fairly cheap. It only has to pump 4-7psi so a cheap one will work. I keep one around just for this.

Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
I'm just going to suggest that maybe, just maybe, your fuel line in the tank is plugged, truck this old can accumlate allot of crap in the tank.

Unless your trying to say you had an electrical one in the tank and instead of replacing it you just added a mechanical one? Dont think thats the case but just to clarify for everyone. |
Re: HELP ok im a blue name now you can reply 78 big ten no start
can you siphon from the tank?
either with a extra hose to a can or useing the hose leading to the carb I've bought no start cars with broken gas lines(sending units) lol can you blow bubbles back into the tank(would mean u have enough gas to suck if you hear bubbles |
