What do I coat my frame with?

Hey all, I am in the process of stripping down my 67 to frame, and I'm needing a quick question answered. What should I coat the frame with? I have seen them painted, but how durable is that going to be? My 67 isnt going to be a daily driver, but in the future I dont want any regrets because I went to cheap. Now having said that, this project is on a budget, so powdercoating will probably be out of the question. I have seen a buddy use the rustoleumn truck bedliner on his frame and bottom of his cab, but we havent seen any effects past a couple months yet. I thought for $7 a can it left a pretty nice, and durable surface. Any opinions on what I should do would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

I used an industrial (Alkyd Enamel)paint (used on tractors) from Valley Paint Manufacturing...my local paint store had it in stock and a few sheens to choose from.....best of all a gallon was 65.00.

What's the story on POR 15? I have heard quite a bit about other but what is it? Where would you get it from?

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

POR15 worked great on mine. Get it good and clean with de-greaser. and they have some kind of prep process with a product called "metal ready". I got mine off of Amazon. After the POR15 I painted it with chassis black. The POR15 is not UV resistant and will "chalk" when exposed to sunlight. I typically dont park upside down but went ahead and topcoated it with chassis black for a better shine. DO NOT get POR15 on your hands. It will not come off. :metal:

Good topic. Im planning on sandblasting my frame suspension pieces. What is recomended for blasted metal? Ive heard por15 is for rusty frames.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

It will coat rusty metal but also clean metal if its prepped right.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

About 3 quarts is enough paint unless you are talking more than one coat. POR 15 is what I used. For a daily driver Rustoleum would be fine but not from a spray can. A tractor supply outlet is another alternative.

if you are going the full route of sandblasting, I'd take the additional time to actually paint it vice por 15 it. painted just looks better. While POR 15 looks good, I've not seen many come close to the clean look of a blasted and properly painted frame.

Longevity? That's another question. If your truck is a hardcore daily driver, maybe POR 15 is a better choice.

I think HotRod C10's frame in post #2 looks VERY nice.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

If it's blasted you should etch it with self etching primer and top coat. If just cleaned up with wire wheel then any paint will do. I personally wouldn't use POR 15. It's no better than Rustoleum. Look at the MSDS sheets. ll depends on what you going to do with the truck. If daily driver all year long then no matter what you use you should apply something over the paint from the time to time. Up here in New England we use oil. Just spray that stuff all over and it seeps in everywhere. I also have used LPS 3 corrosion inhibitor. Work excellent on my 79 that I plowed with for years.

Anyone wanna recommend me some brands for etching primer paint?

Im not real sure what the plans are yet. Rebuilding the front end with drop spindles and a bigger sway bar. Like to make a nice resto mod with LS engine but well see

Sandblasted and then powdercoated here.

Does anyone have any pictures of their frame coated with POR 15 for a visual? Like I said, my 67 wont be a daily driver at all, but I want something that will last, and give off that nice clean look. I plan to scrape what i can off, then degrease and power wash (repeat as needed) then take a wire wheel to it.

I use Dupont Vari-Prime. Been using it for years. I'm sure there are others equally as good but this is all I know.

GM Reconditioning paint. Same stuff GM used from the factory, is sprayable right out of the can and can be sprayed on bare metal.

I was happy with the POR-15. Cleaned and de-greased, then the POR-15 metal ready primer, then I just brushed it on and then top-coated it with rattle-can spray paint when the POR-15 was almost dry (finger-drag test).

Picture of my 71 with por15 on frame and suspension parts. Follow directions and it should adhere for a very long time. I went with high gloss but you have a lot of different options with por15.

I checked out the link in your build thread to the kbs website. Looks like a quality product that I might just have to try, thanks for the info.

I used Rustoleum on mine. Preped the frame real good, primed, then sprayed a few coats of paint. The reason I went with Rustoleum is it is pretty durable and if it does chip it is easy to fix.

I have used the gas tank liner and it worked great. I am going to be using KBS coating on my frame. Love their products and especially the black gloves they sell.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

It's somewhat a myth powder coat is expensive, but it's sure a lot more $ than a six pack of spray bombs.

I had my frame, cross members, axle and another dozen parts PCd for $1100. They blast and prep everything just right with awesome results. As others have said before me, I wouldn't PC a driver, because paint can be touched up to match or close.

I think it also depends on the condition of the frame. If it's rusted I'd bypass any thought of powder coat and run with Master Series. I doubt anything is more durable, their primer is TOUGH.

For what it's worth, I did spray bomb my frame with Rustoleum with nice results. Lasted 20 years plus, but it's dry here and the truck sat in the garage. IMO, if you've gone to the trouble of stripping the truck down, I'd forget about spray bombs.

That's a good 6 years! Did you powder the rad support and Inner fenders as well?

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

Check out the Eastwood 2K spray paint in cans. You press a button on the bottom of can to release the catalyst, shake and spray. I like the way it sprays, but be advised there isn't a lot of paint in those cans.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

I brushed/rolled 3-4 coats of rustbullet on mine. I was in a rush to get all the coats on while still tacky so I ended up finishing at 2am. My prep was spot on, the frame was perfect. My regret was not spraying it. Next time I'll spray or maybe just send it out to be powder coated.

I've used both methods. Time and money! I can get similar results by cleaning, prepping, and painting my parts with POR15. The thing is that I would take three times longer to finish my parts vs. taking them to the local powdercoating company and having them done. I decide which parts are better powdercoated and which parts I can paint with POR-15 and get a happy balance of time and money in my project. And any way you choose, make sure you have some nitrile gloves to protect your hands in case you're using POR-15. Harbor Freight sells some nitrile (blue) medium weight gloves that hold up really well. I buy POR-15 and similar generic paint products at my local automotive paint store.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

Its all about how well you prep, prep and prep some more. Also temperature and methods you have available to apply. Just did a bunch of blasted parts with EGC epoxy primer and some eurethane topcoat. Came out great, but cost me about $200 ($100 gallon primer and $100 pint of black) in materials bought from a local automotive paint supply house. To do a whole frame like this, ouch and better have good ventilation. I previously pressure washed, wire wheeled, scraped the frame and applied Eastwoods paint over rust products. Looked good at the time, but 5 years later needs to be redone and this was on a weekend, fair weather driver. Personally, if you are going down to the bare frame, powdercoat it, or epoxy and a topcoat. Long term goal for me, find another frame and go powdercoat.

Re: What do I coat my frame with?

Agree w/previous comments, it's all about prep.
I'm a POR-15 fan, it hasn't let me down. Media blasted + painted assembled frame about 15 years ago. Frame even sat out on Oregon farm under a single thin blue tarp cover. It's a little dull (satin) from the weather/elements) today but still sold, no peeling, chipping, resists all kinds of chemicals. Still beat on it during suspension overhaul. Stuff is tough as nails!
