Options sticker location??

Hello, I was just looking over a 75 custom deluxe and cant seem to find the options sticker. I looked in the glove box, nothing, checked the 1 door i could open, nothing. looked at the drivers fender well under the hood, there is a square where adhesive was, i'm thinking that was the spot? any help is highly appreciated. thanks!

every square i've ever seen had the spid in the g.box, but you never know. the adhesive on your inner was probably a jack decal or w.washer sticker. try looking in the back of the seat for a build sheet

what years were those? my '68 gmc 910, '71 longhorn, & 71 jimmy had them in the g.box, as did my '76 blaze & 78 camper spec. & my '85 crew. was there a window in the early '70's when this was done?

Did you look in the springs under the seat bottom? I had a build sheet there. Probably need to remove seat from truck to get it out in one piece...

Re: Options sticker location??

Maybe location was dependent on Factory. My 73 was built in Fremont.

Re: Options sticker location??

From the ones I have seen they were on the inner fender on some 73 to 76 units
All the 77 and newer that I have seen were in glovebox

I think it did depend on the plant

Janesville and Fremont also seemed to put the paper build sheet in the seat springs

well, seeing how the model yrs are all over the map on inner fender stickers, it's probably a plant thing. i wonder why, you'd think they would be one size standardized across the board. which plants used them? anyone with a inner sticker want to post what plant

Re: Options sticker location??

I can't help with the specifics but would like to add some "color commentary" -

a) The adhesive label in question is the SPID label (aka "Service Parts ID label). My recollection is that '73-80 was on the fender well and '81 - '87 was in the glovebox. That might be too simplistic, though; I will keep my eye open for documentation as I go about other things.

b) Differences between plants: there has always been a desire for plant process to be common but that is a very difficult thing to do. Keep in mind at this time there were 7 plants producing these vehicles, each with a distinct history (in terms of prior products, and in terms of plant "ownership"). This results in immovable objects on the assembly floor that have to be worked around and in precedence that is difficult to overcome. Hence the variation between plants. (Heck - there is even variation between processes on different lines within the same plant).

c) The paper sheet found under the seat is different altogether: that's the build manifest (or build sheet). Seats were built up in a separate area of the plant (aka "the cushion room") and the specific build options were conveyed via these build sheets. They were supposed to be thrown away when done but it was simply easier to just leave them in place and build the seat up around them.

I have never found a build sheet in any of my collector cars (except one) so you are very fortunate to have one. That specific document is not housed or stored in any official collection and exists only if you find it in the vehicle. I wish now I had thought to keep them when I was watching my truck get built.

I should add: my Flint built '87 had the SPID label in the glovebox -

and I did find one build sheet. This was above the fuel tank on my '65 GTO, built in Pontiac Michigan:

This has been my experience with the location of the SPID's in the trucks I have owned . The early ones seem to have it on the inner wheel well and from 1977 and up I have always seen them in the glovebox.

If you need to know what it left the factory with maybe the GM Heritage package is available for your truck. Maybe Keith knows what years they are available for and will chime back in.

Thanks, Frank -

Unfortunately the Heritage Center does not have documents available for our trucks until 1977.

The only other option would be if the truck was built in Oshawa: GM of Canada does have build records for those vehicles either built in Canada or destined for the Canadian market.

Re: Options sticker location??

Fact is, if you've looked at all the common locations, it has been removed.

Mine was peeled off the glovebox before I got it as it still had a faint adhesive outline.

Maybe a clean freak owner that the label started coming off, and finally pulled off to get it outta there.

Kids removing it--I found the build sheet for my Nova... Unfortunately, I found it while pulling one of my toy cars out from under the seat when I was 7 or 8 (funny what you can remember), back then the parents didn't want it, it was just paper trash anyway... I did find the corner of another build sheet years later under the rug, but a couple decades of daily driver duty had rendered it mostly a decomposed pulpy mess. What are you gonna do? Its not as if it is a true permanent part of the vehicle anyway.

Alex.
