Your ultimate road trip?
I keep telling my wife, "someday I'm going to take a week off, hop in the truck and just go wherever the truck takes me."
What was your favorite road trip in your 67-72 chevy truck, suburban, blazer? Where did you go, what did you stop and see? Feel free to post pictures. Some of my favorite threads on the forum have been of road trips and looking at the pictures of different parts of our great country. |
Re: Your ultimate road trip?
I have not done it yet. BUT....
I want to cruise Route 66 all the way across the country to Cali. Then cruise US-1 north all the way. Take about 3 weeks and really see the sites. The Wifey and I love road tripping. Originally I wanted to do it in the Factory-Five Cobra I am going to build, but then the '70 fell into my lap so it might happen in it first. We drive from the DFW area to Prescott, AZ about 2 times each year for my daughter school functions. And love the nostalgia along the way. Last year we stopped at the Cadillac Ranch and painted our names on the cars. |
Re: Your ultimate road trip?

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
Ive never owned one of these trucks that I would truly trust on a long road trip. Fixing stuff along the way leaves no appeal to me =)
I would like to drive down to Bonneville some day. Im tired of driving my dailys down there, I wanna be one of the cool kids lol. |
Re: Your ultimate road trip?
I really want to take two weeks off, drive over to New Mexico, then head North up to the Red River area (one of my favorite places), then up through the mountains of Colorado, into Wyoming and up to Yellowstone.
From there, up to Montana (always wanted to see Montana), back through Idaho, Utah, over to Colorado and slowly back home. Some how, some way, some day! |
Re: Your ultimate road trip?
I have not been able to take my truck on a long road trip yet as it is still in bodyshop limbo but have taken several cross country trips in my wife's 72 Malibu convertible .Our longest journey was from Ga to Nashville to New York to Washington State down through California to Texas and then back to Nashville then back home to Ga .We were gone 17 days through 22 states and over 6600 miles with 5 other Chevelle's traveling with us.

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
In July 2011, I went to Florida and watched the STS-135 launch after spending the night camping in the back of my '70 C-10. Loitered a couple days in the area to check out the museums, then took off up the east coast and spent a day in Savannah and another in Charleston. Almost 1700 miles later, I was home in Nashville. No problems. Except everywhere I stopped someone tried to buy my truck.
Now my camaro, she and I have a long and storied history. |
Re: Your ultimate road trip?
I've only done it on Harleys, but Colorado, Wyoming and the Black Hills of South Dakota are hard to beat. It would also be REALLY COOL to do Hot Rod Power Tour next year through the Smoky Mountains...not sure about the route, but it is starting in Charlotte, NC.
|
Re: Your ultimate road trip?
HRPT Is Charlotte to somewhere in New England area.
I have several on my "Bucket List" 1.Rt66 I lived almost on it for years and have traveled some of it. 2 HRPT 3.Woodward Dream Cruise 4.Cruisin the Coast 5.Brothers show or Rene's or both. |
Re: Your ultimate road trip?
I have a plan...when I retire (in 4 years) I am going to hook a trailer to the RV and drive to the SW USA and find a rust free 67 (medium blue, white top, running)...buy it then spend a couple months moving the RV around to different "base camps" and exploring the country in the new to me 67.

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
I had a '67 C10 that I bought in the spring of '79 when I was 21 and we went on many wild adventures. I'll think for a minute and try to remember if any are suitable for a family forum.........Nope, couldn't come up with any:lol::lol::lol:
But I never gave it a second thought about that truck not being up for the task. I put the second hundred thousand miles on it and never once had to walk away for it being broke down. Stuck, now that's another thing. |

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
Drove my 72 from northern California to Tennessee.Other than running over a semi tire in the middle of the road everything went smooth.

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
I'm 64, still blessed with excellent health and have the Hot Rod Power Tour on my bucket list. For me it wouldnt only be the Power Tour cause from where I live in Western Canada getting to the start point of any Power Tour would be a trip unto itself.

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
Did the 2013 Power Tour but i did it in my '69 Road Runner. The Ford 9" rear end messed up and we did all but the last stop. I drive my '72 everywhere though, been on full day trips 500+ miles in a day round trip. Done day trips in the C10 from Tulsa to Dallas, KC, Topeka, Wichita, MoKan & we normally take the small highways when we go just to see more stuff.

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
Never went very far in the truck (yet) but in 2004 I took an all stock but the paint 1975 Pontiac Bonneville from southern WV to Niles, Michigan by myself. Up there to see a girl of course and I must say, it was the most fun driving I have ever had. I stopped off in OH and bought a couple rifles at Aimsurplus (if I had it to do over I'd not gone to see the girl and spent the money on more guns  but that's hormones for you!).
The drive across Indiana was the most memorable: that old land cruiser would get away from me and I'd look down and be doing 85 and not even notice it (no cruise control) and people would yell across 3 lanes at red lights asking me about the car. As was normal whenever I took a girl out in that car something broke....this time I got air in the lines and had to run a red light, well two red lights, because she had no intention of stopping! Bled the brakes in a parking lot and all was well again. Took it up to Benton Harbor with the girl on my right shoulder....I mean....who DOESN'T want a bench seat? A trucker passed us and I swear he gave me a "thumbs up!" :smoke: Now if I could, I'd load up my truck with all the parts I could find that I want and drive it solo, back roads the whole way to Las Vegas, and get that Kount's Customs guy to restore it. Then fly out there and drive it back! |
Re: Your ultimate road trip?
This November, I will be towing my 26' goose neck enclosed trailer to SEMA with my 1972 C20 because my Mustang will be on display. This will be about a 2600 mile road trip.

in 1974 I drove my truck to Mustang, Nevada. I saw the sights, met the locals, and left in the neck of time.

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
Drove to Daytona, Fla. last year for the Turkey run. Just got back from my third annual trip to Pigeon Forge, Tn. for Shades of the Past. Been down to Charleston, S.C. and over to Asheville, N.C. several times. "Ya' Gotta' Drive' Em." It's also my daily driver. My truck sees about 25,000 miles a year with all the side trips.

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
I've already posted about the 2013 HRPT but forgot to mention the truck did 3200 miles round trip and I never had one problem. There were several of us driving our trucks and only 1 that I know of had problems maybe 2 but we all made it the whole way.
I drove from Liberty SC to Terrel Tx in 13hrs only stoped 1 time for gas in Ms. By the way I had a tire hit the truck also in Ala.state line!;):chevy: https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...02518194_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...22263485_n.jpg |

I've taken road trips in these trucks many times. The longest one way trips were CA to MD. Nothing too exciting to report, except a mishap here or there and some fun side triips taken when stopping in on friends along the way. We had the family camper for 18 years ('71 Cheyenne Custom Camper/20),so lots of trips up and down the East Coast to the mountains or beaches.
The all time best road trip was out west. My wife and daughter flew to Santa Fe to visit her friend after she graduated nursing school. A couple weeks before they left it hit me...screw being practical...screw the work...I'll be miserable if I stay here. So,I called my dad and invited him, then got the truck prepped. My son, father, and I hit the road to Santa Fe! My oldest and youngest sisters lived in Taos,so after spending some time in Santa Fe were trucked on up to my sisters' for a visit. Had a great visit there,my dad stayed for a longer visit with his girls before flying back on my wife's ticket. We headed north to Chama the first night. The Cumbres &Toltec Railway had just (re)opened, which we knew nothing about till we got there. So,the next morning we hopped aboard for a ride of a lifetime. We left there for Pagosa Springs,CO to visit a friend. Over Wolf Creek Pass and out to Cortez, then Mesa Verde,Four Corners,Painted Desert, and down to Page,AZ at Lake Powell/Glen Canyon. We camped on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, checked out the Arches & Moab before heading down to Flagstaff. We camped up on Mt. Humphreys for a night. We went down Oak Creek Canyon and enjoyed slide rock and camped the night. We checked out Sedona before heading back up to Mountainaire, where I had lived before meeting my wife. I still had a Blazer and pickup stored at my buddy's. He was driving them occasionally to keep the juices flowing. The only mechanical issue the whole trip was descending the North Rim an exhaust manifold blew out. It was coast, brake, coast brake for probably about 10 miles and I guess it was too much on the old cast iron. And,I had just had dual exhaust made for it before leaving. So,once back in Flagstaff it went to an exhaust shop. We couldn't locate a manifold so we went with headers (and doglegged the new exhaust). While the truck was in the shop,my buddy let us borrow his boat. We hooked it to the Blazer and headed to Lake Powell for the day. Once all squared away with the exhaust issue we started back east by way of Petrified Forest,Meteor Crater, then hit the hiway. We hopped onto Rt66 here and there and went to some of those famous roadside attractions. We camped at White Sands one night, and pretty much bolted home from there because our time had run out. I have a couple pictures on the computer. This was before digital and I still need to convert the rest. I've shown these before, but one more time along with the story: |

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
Just want to take my 71 4x4 SWB to Deer Camp, which is about 4 hours away! These trucks bring back a lot of old memories of hunts long ago, whitetail bucks and Chevy trucks just go together!

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
The top thing on my bucket list is a cross country trip over at least a month. I guess this will have to wait at least 20 years until retirement. I figure I'd go out west by a northern route and return by a southern route, or vice versa. I could list a million things I'd like to see along the way. My truck itself has never been more than 100 miles from home in the 9 years I've owned. Not that I don't trust it, I just don't own a full tanker truck that I'd need to follow me!

Here's the general map of that trip,as far as a straight shot goes:
http://mapq.st/15SziZF Here we are on the Hatteras to Ocrakoke Island,NC ferry on another road trip to the beach. The next picture is down the coast at Edisto Island State Park,SC. That was a great camping location (truck was parked elsewhere in pic). The campsite was at the tree line right at the edge of the beach. I backed-in and the sea breeze blew straight into the camper. We rented wooden lounge chairs,so the beach was like our patio out back. I want to go back!! |
Re: Your ultimate road trip?
There is a power tour between DesMoines IA Goodguys event and the Columbus OH Goodguys stop a week later. I have done it a couple of times and it was great. Two planned stops a day where a shop hosts you or you get to see someone's private collection.
There is a coordinator that sets it all up and the groups stays together all week. You get to meet some great people and share the experience together. Check it out on the Goodguys website. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Your ultimate road trip?
I have 2 that I would like to do. The first would be to leave Calgary and head west to Vancouver. Then south through Seattle and all the way down the coast to Hollyweird. Then East to Vegas and Bonneville, then North again into Saskatchewan to the family farm and home again. The other would be coast to coast in Canada. Both trips would have no schedule, just easy cruising and sight seeing.

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
Well, My 71 Blazer is in a million pieces in my garage and my 70 lwb is a work truck that I am not sure that I would take out of smith county at the moment, but reading y'alls posts makes me so much more anxious to finish the blazer. I have always wanted to scoot out to California and ride up the coast with the top off and the salty breeze blowing. Maybe next year. I had never heard of HRPT and I am so upset to find out it left this year from Arlington which is only a couple hours from me. I totally could have took the vette up there if I had known enough in advance. It is on my radar now and I will have to do that one day. I have taken the vette on several road trips to Austin and Galveston. It was great riding it on the seawall blvd with the top off.

Re: Your ultimate road trip?
I think this is a great thread!
I would also love to travel down of what is left of Route 66! Will be taking a road trip in 2 weeks to drive the Texas portion of it at least! I would also love to travel to New Mexico, on up to Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana! Keith |
Re: Your ultimate road trip?
When you get out west of Albuquerque it looks like the movie Cars.
Keith, Enjoy the 300 mile boring trip up 287 to Amarillo. |
