Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
Recently bought a 74 GMC Suburban 2500 Super custom...
sweet ride: - 4" lifted - 35 inch tires - 2 year old crate 350 engine - edelbrock perfformer intake - they replaced the whole front end during the last inspection very happy with it some pics of it https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-S...101_124037.jpg the night we picked it up https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-3...231_193050.jpg on the road with our other 86 Suburban https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-F...101_121117.jpg very cool tag https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-g...110_162132.jpg Edelbrock SDT mufflers, sound great https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-C...102_132658.jpg they installed a later model roofconsole https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-i...110_162008.jpg it had been standing still for allmost 2 years, so replaced the transmission and engine oil and filters https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-z...105_163658.jpg they swapped the tailgate for cargo doors, but didnt swap the bottom part...doors dont shut all the way https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-v...110_162413.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Z...110_162407.jpg I replaced all bulbs (all were broken) with leds, planning on putting ledstrips in there and painting the reflector and bucket gloss white like in my other Burb. but at least I can see how fast I drive at night for now https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3...101_195547.jpg it backfired on cold starts and took for ever to crank it it the morning. checked the HEI BAT terminal and it only got 11.4V and during cranking ot dropped to 7-8V. So supercharged the HEI by wiring it to the firewall terminal through a relay. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-b...wiring_HEI.gif https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o...112_144606.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-y...112_155659.jpg result: no more backfires cold starts in 2-3 rotations of engine in the morning stronger idle |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
Very nice! I like the early square bodies because they are a transition from the '72s.

Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
Nice score! With 4" lift and 35's I thought it'd tower over the black and white truck. Are they the same height?
|
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
no they arent Bruiser. driving the Sylvester (BW suburban) feels like it is slammed and bagged right now....smooth and low ride...while the lifted Monster feels very rough and high, hahaha...
Sylvester has no lift and 30.5" tires and Monster has 4" lift and 34.5" tires here's a better view: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-z...111_150810.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-G...111_150815.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9...111_150840.jpg |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
I recently bought a CB Performance Black Box for $175,-
pretty nice specs and hooks right up to my HEI ignition. http://www.cbperformance.com/Product...oductCode=2013 Quote:

Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
Real Nice I see you were talking about switching the tailgate for doors. I asked about that before but never got a clear answer. Do you know what all needs to be done to do this I have a tailgate but prefer doors.

The swap is easy on the pre-81 models I believe. They have the mounts for the hinges of the doors already in the body. The newer models 81-87 I believe dont. so you just screw the doors on. The one thing you want to make sure to get is the bottom part where the door locks to the chassis. I havent done it myself, but its supposed to also just be fastned with some bolts and maybe some strong glue of some kind. |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
score! got my hands on a cheap second hand double fan setup.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0...129_211331.jpg now I can take that ugly nasty flex-fan off. question: anybody know this style of connector. the guy that sold it to me didnt know from what car it came, nor did he have the connectors. anybody where you can get these? https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-g...130_124031.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-N...130_124023.jpg this is the only info I can find on the fans. Cant find any info on these numbers. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-F...130_124151.jpg also tested the tach in 4cilinder mode 2night to see if it would max out....yes it did..check 0:59 seconds, hahahaha... guess I'll have to put it in 6cilinder mode to get me a range of 6,000rpm in stead of 8,000rpm http://youtu.be/HaDEFFWnXh8 |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
how much trouble was it switching to rear cargo doors?
|
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
Wow nice find. I envy you having two trucks that run. My project is on hold after a ski accident.

only thing I know is they didnt take the bottom part of the chassis from the vehicle where it locks the doors...and now the doors dont alock all the way https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-v...110_162413.jpg which should have looked like this: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-v...012_171230.jpg |

and thats the way I like it...cars were build to drive and should be driven...not stowed away in a garage only to come out every now and then...that would be a loss for everybody |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
I hate you had to park Sylvester after owning it so long, but the upside is you replaced it with a 3/4 ton lifted round eye Burb. I think you'll enjoy this truck more after you've done all the upgrades to it you did to the other truck.

Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
couple updates:
Master brake cylinder was leaking. replaced it and cleaned up the booster. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-O...414_184117.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-r...414_185739.jpg checked the booster and luckily the booster was ok and dry on the inside. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--...415_190047.jpg hooked up the angel eyes to my parking lights https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-r...419_165548.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7...419_215145.jpg sold to old stereos and got a very good deal on a Kenwood double din. Now to make a plan for a custom center console. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-x...417_091515.jpg cleaned up my shocks. wanted to know the brand of the lift kit the PO used. it rides very stif so thinking about upgrading to Ranhco RS9000XL shocks. Anybody used them before? https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-L...420_144732.jpg added a couple of gauges to my top dashboard. tach with custom Monster display (set the setting to 6 cylinders and changed the range from 8 to 6 k), vacuumgauge and voltmeter. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-S...406_213727.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-N..._214231774.jpg central door locking and alarm wasnt working. PO made a mess of it. so took te whole thing out of the car. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-w...424_200501.jpg checked it, labelled it and voila. fixed. all doors locked at the touch of a button. Nice feature with two little girls and 2 big dogs and only two hands available hahahaha... https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-9...424_221706.jpg just a nice pic of my girls and our Monster. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-3...426_141133.jpg now its a real Monster, hahaha. asked Monster Energy in America for some sitckers. 6 weeks later I received them here in the Netherlands! https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-G...413_210042.jpg closed up the gap GM for some reason left in the defrost connection of the ventilation system with Ducttape. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o...426_154356.jpg |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
he guys, finally an update!
I had bought a CB Performance Black Box (programmable ignition). I already had the box since december, but didnt have time to get it installed. http://www.cbperformance.com/Product...oductCode=2013 http://www.cbperformance.com/v/vspfi...tos/2013-3.jpg Finally found some time this week. I had some hard time getting it to run properly. I tried installing it using the magnetic trigger schematic. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4s...it?usp=sharing but the signal wasnt good enough. I had all kinds of noise and the car wanted to stall all the time... so I looked at the options again and saw the point_module_hall_coil_wiring option: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4s...it?usp=sharing rewired it and VOILA!...runs like a champ here is the manual: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4s...it?usp=sharing these are the software screens: main screen https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/Dg...E=w693-h520-no load range screen: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-w...502_205030.jpg timing map screen https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-J...502_205052.jpg you can program a 21x21 timing map and have a couple of special buttons in the bottom to help. I made a excel spreadsheet to help me design a timing map. I set a couple of numbers and it fills the 21x21 table https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-S...ming_table.bmp little clip of the software running https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaVhzNNnUnw so...now to find some time to start testing and maybe go on a adyno anytime soon |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
Sold my engine 10 weeks ago and finally could rebuild the small block I had bought a year ago.
1970 Short block 3970010 casting, bored over .030 and honed 14101083 heads with 64cc chambers for some extra compression Comp Cams XE250H-10 camshaft Sealed power Pistons H345DCP30 Cloyes double roller chain 9-3500TX9 Edelbrock Torker II intake 600cfm throttle plate with IMPCO 425 propane mixer CB Performance Black Box (fully programmable ignition system) new oil pump replaced the v-belts with a 93 C1500 serp-system finally finished my build and got around to starting the engine... dont mind my Dutch comment http://youtu.be/bH2MqekWXi4 after breakin in the engine for over 20min. I tried driving it. It had absolutely no power at more then 5% of the throttle and vacuum dropped allmost immediately when increasing throttle. Vacuum at idle was just a poor 10-12inches. after some research, pulling the intake and watching the valves while turning the balancer I found out I had the camshaft wrongly aligned there is a inner and outer ZERO on the small sprocket. I aligned it using the inner ZERO....dooohhhhhhhh!!!! https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5...9_chainset.jpg see where it is about 20-30 degrees out of alignment https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-d...hain_wrong.jpg this is correctly aligned https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-o...hain_right.jpg started the engine again and idle was at 18 inches of vacuum and idle quality was very smooth http://youtu.be/iQVNYHc4s2g at first I used a gasket without a exhaust crossover, but the exhaust just blew right through: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9...719_213052.jpg so searched a little online and found a guy that had stuffed the crossover in the intake with aluminium foil and cut some blocking plates from a tin can. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-5...722_200656.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-G...722_200701.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-y...722_202348.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-v...722_212030.jpg drove it for over 100 miles now and the intake has not changed a bit in color. Guess the block off is working https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-g...726_205124.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-k...726_205131.jpg final assembly with air filter on https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2...726_205342.jpg without https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/--...706_214825.jpg and pictures of the bare engine https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-v...702_201150.jpg first mileage I got was 1:4,16 driving 100 kph over 100 miles previous engine with performer cam from Edelbrock and dual plane intake got us only 1:3 I did notice the engine gets pretty warm on 100kph speed....105-110C added my 5HP stickers from CB Performance and Comp Cams ofcourse https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-z...725_154610.jpg will report back here....but so far, so good! oh and a nice pic with my dogs https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A...726_143348.jpg |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
Nice progress! How do you like that cam and intake?

Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
ok, time for an update.
engine lasted for about 300 miles. then a little knocking quickly developed into a hard nocking during cruise. took off the oil pan and found that #1 rod bearing was causing knock. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-4...004_144530.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-A...004_162615.jpg although the engine ran fine, I found these blue traces of coolant on all four side of the engine. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-7...005_140300.jpg took the intake of and guess the cola can isnt strong enough to stand exhaust heat. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-0...005_151536.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-F...005_151540.jpg took my heads of and found black debris in them https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C...005_153042.jpg most of it collected at the cabin side (rear) of the heads https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-j...005_153032.jpg closer inspection of the engine showed that also #1 main bearing was gone https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Y...011_142836.jpg other bearings dont look better https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-j...011_142858.jpg I havent really found the answer as to why the bearings went out so fast, ut decided to buy a new crank and reuild it again....guess some dirt got into the oil system and destroyed them |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
a friend from a friend offered to weld the exhause crossover for me...pretty cool
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-R...017-WA0006.jpg put a plug in https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-h...017-WA0009.jpg welded it for me https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--...017-WA0010.jpg cool photo of him at work https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y...017-WA0011.jpg took the shortblock and heads to the shop https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-V...018_124830.jpg heads were not flat (I was told they are by seller) this is a photo of three passes by the machine shop and the heads still wasnt flat....well...the extra compression will be nice for my Propane setup https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-S...029-WA0006.jpg traced the debris in my heads back to coal in my valve cover. I feel so dumb for not cleaning them and putting them with coal inside them on my fresh engine.... https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-N...018_155228.jpg while the shop was working on my heads, replaced my cam bearings and replaced a couple freeze plugs..I went ahead, pulled my dashboard and placed some green leds behind the gauges https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-l...019_210226.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-j...019_210234.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-l...019_233318.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-m...022_200551.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9...022_202814.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-b...029_215059.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-F...029_214623.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-P...029_220437.jpg short block is back...bought a new crank and bearings https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y...108_130220.jpg crank is in https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-D...108_141448.jpg putting pistons back in https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-H...109_123147.jpg finished and closed the bottom part https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-2...109_154646.jpg that is where I am at right now. hope to finish the top this weekend. |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
your pix bring back some great memories :)
i had a 85 2500 suburban with 6'' suspension lift and 35's and it drove like a school bus. that unibody construction gave it zero flex at all, but it was a real blast to drive and an eye catcher everywhere i went. |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
thanks, cool!
|
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
well..a lot happened in since the last update I made here. Ill spread it over a couple of updates.
for some reason I had the urge to check one or two bearings, before finally putting the engine back in. and what I found sucked mucho! all bearings had some kind of damage. and I had only untill now spun the crank by hand ...WHAT THE **** IS GOING ON! check out the material in the oil feed holes https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-R...116-WA0004.jpg this one is the worst. looks like the crank I got wasnt finished correctly and the oil feed holes damages the bearings https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--...16-WA0006.jpeg I was about to give up |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
I friend helped out. he checked the crank again. finished the oil feed holes, so they werent sharp anymore and polished it were needed.
also bought some plastigauge, to check the crank and rods in the engine. ordered new bearings (again). waiting for parts I took apart my alternator and gave it the same color as the engine VHT Kermit Green 8) https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-0...129_131906.jpg plastigauge is in. the assembly and checking can begin: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-O...129_133725.jpg main bearing at 0.002.....thats OK. should be between 0.002 and 0.003 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-e...129_140151.jpg checked a coupl of other bearings and some were 0.002 and 0.0015. I checked with some friends and online and although 0.0015 is tight, I should be OK. Even in WOT runs my engine does only about 4k rpm. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-O...129_143002.jpg timing chain and first head back on. Allmost put the timing chain on again with the wrong timing. I was glad I cought that before closing her up. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-8...30-WA0004.jpeg just a nice pic of the deck. I can look at pics like this for hours. Love it https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-O...130_193446.jpg intake en valvecover er weer op, nadat ik de kleppen weer gesteld had. heb besloten om meer groen te spuiten, zodat naderhand het groen beter zichtbaar blijft in de motor ruimte https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-F...130_213738.jpg borrowed an engine hoist and started putting her back in myself. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_...207_142007.jpg TOUCHDOWN! Monster has a heart again. now to put everything back on again. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-y...07-WA0006.jpeg took off the vacuum advance and locked it, since I run a programmable ignition that also handles vacuum advance. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z...207_161802.jpg bought some new hose clamps, but these were just a little to big and thus didnt close up correctly. so ended up using the old ones again. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-i...208_211538.jpg |
Re: Monster - 1974 GMC Suburban 2500 Super Custom
finished the engine, dont like the red distributor cap:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-V...208_215825.jpg I had bought a nice stainless hose and straight water neck, but the hose hits the air cleaner when its one. So need to get a swivel at 45 degree I think. for now I put the old hose and neck back.. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...GL._SX466_.jpg http://static.speedwaymotors.com/RS/...91015822_L.jpg ready for take of: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-N...213_003803.jpg finally engine startup and a buddy filmed with the GoPro back on the road again https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-H...14-WA0005.jpeg back in front of our house https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-C...14-WA0007.jpeg went by the shop and listened to the gnein using an stethoscoop. no strange noises... http://i00.i.aliimg.com/wsphoto/v0/1...ostic-Tool.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-p...215_160420.jpg drove for over 300 miles by now and everything still seems fine. |
