Let's see your favorite rear fuel tank filler options
As I get closer to making this pile of parts look like a truck, I need to get a rear tank going. Filling through the bed seems easiest to manage, but there are many cool options. Post your favorites below!

I dig the magnets ^^^
Here's my panel access to under floor filler neck. PS: Don't worry folks; the filler neck is not inside the cargo area, just the door to access it below the floor. |

I just order this one. Came in last night. Looks sharp.

We went with a fairly simple filler.

The '50 pickup I did. The other plate is a battery access cover.

On my 1940 Ford. Both stainless inserts are flush with top of wood.

Re: Let's see your favorite rear fuel tank filler options
I put mine in the stake pocket of my fleetside.

Since my suburban gas tank's fill neck bends to the right of my rear truck fender, I bought a Harley Davidson gas cap and mounted it to the right rear fender. It mounts flush, pushes in and screws tight.

Fords are different from Chevies, at least in 1940 they are. Plus it's back halfed. There's a 1"x1/8" steel frame work under the wood. Just pre drilled holes in the supports and screwed the wood down from below. I didn't want any bolt heads showing above.

Although I'm mostly a Chevy guy I really like the looks of the 1940/41 Ford pick ups

I went around the backside of the fender. I’d recommend moving it up an inch or two to make the fuel angle a little steeper. This is a slow fill.

Re: Let's see your favorite rear fuel tank filler options
I've been getting questions about how I have my filler neck inside the cargo area. Again, THE FILLER NECK IS NOT INSIDE THE CAB - ONLY THE ACCESS DOOR! The filler neck is below the floor, the cap is sealed and the tank vented into a wheelwell. While I may look like I huff gas fumes all day, I assure you I don't.

here's mine. old fuel door from an scrap envoy. door was flat to start with. a little fun getting the shape on the fender and the perimeter ring cut from the donor.

Re: Let's see your favorite rear fuel tank filler options
hey ogre, did you use the stock spare tire carrier mounts or custom fab a new one. wondering the diameter of the tire you use as well. looks good. my spare tire mount is long gone but will fab something if I can't find a good used one. may not work with my box anyway. my tires will be 235/60r17, so 28.1" tall. hope the spare fits without hitting the cab.
I always thought your truck was a cool design, a truck with a trunk. cool. |

You could split the board at one of the cross-sills. You would have to do the whole bed length. |
Re: Let's see your favorite rear fuel tank filler options
that bed filler on the green truck looks really showy, great for a low use unit I guess. very tiddly looking. my truck will be a daily driver if I ever get it done before I have to surrender my lic, haha. I plan to use the box for stuff so the fender mounted gas door is a must for me. besides, we get snow up here and it is one more way to get water in the tank when filling. sure looks good though.

had to modify the spare carrier 3 ways: 1) move spare out 1/2", i had drilled and lightened plate steel 2) drill above plate to handle 5 lug rims 3) shorten top arms to allow for tonneau cover to lap over bed side not to mention: 4) modify mirror to look past spare |

Here's mine. It's a Hagan push-to-open style. I also have the Hagan gas cap that you don't have to remove to put gas in.

1st thread I ever read here was the one for rear gas tank. Saw roger55's post and said that was what going to do...way before I even started working on my truck. Saw several other very cool ideas on this thread. Kel

It's "trick" - but it's showy for the sake of being showy. Not that that is all bad but if it gets in the way of using your truck the way you want - unloading a bed full of stuff to gas up, then I think it isn't well thought out. A lot of cool ideas well carried out in this thread. Better than mine, frankly. I like Mark's (Black Sheep) but I don't know how he managed to locate where to drill his board SO exactly?! My Tanks, Inc. "special" tank supposedly made for our TF trucks had the filler come up exactly where one of my bed strips fell. I had to seal it and weld in a new location - ugh! My personal favorite is still JJ's. His is just a recessed gas cap in a stainless kitchen sink drain escutcheon (I think). It's simple, it saves the wood finish from spilled gas, and just looks clean to me. |

Jaguar fuel door.

Re: Let's see your favorite rear fuel tank filler options
^^^ I like the Jag door.
Obviously you had to cut it out of the donor and cut the right size hole in your truck. But other than that, was there a lot of metal work prior to spot welding it in? |

Thanks Ogre. You can get a cap from any XJ6 I believe up trough ‘86. Here’s one on eBay for $15.
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F232350728215 I made a cardboard template pretty much like this but it wasn’t too difficult, just had to make sure it flowed with the contour of the fender and was positioned in such a way that it wouldn’t hit the bed roll when it was open. I am by no means a metal fabricator nor have any experience doing anything like this, but with the help of countless videos on welding I was able to make it work. Bondo and body filler are my friends! Lol! |
