anyone built their own lowering blocks?

i have a 4/4 suspension drop on my 67 and the back is just sitting too high for my taste, so i want to lower it some more. all i have right now is a 4" drop coil. i am taking shop class at high school right now and i am not doing anything, so i was wondering if any of you guys have built 2" lowering blocks. if so, can you give me instructions or pictures.

thanks,

67pro-street

I used 4" C channel, cut two holes and welded 3/4' pipe where the U bolts go though then capped, basicly a box with two reinforced holes in it.

TX firefighter has some good pics of lowering blocks he done. Just take some good steel square tubing or some good angle and drill holes in it for the u-bolts. Get longer u-bolts and just bolt them in.

Yup, I made my own...but I use 1/2" aluminum bar, and made four for each side, so that I could play around with the 1/2" - 2" drop range out back. Came in handy as 2" was too much (along with my 3" springs), and I've currently decided that I like two plates. This is the way the DJM drop kit packaged and sold, but with 4 -1" blocks. If you go with 2", you will need longer U-bolts.

I made a couple once out of solid stock, if you go that route you better have something good to cut it with :p

I made some out of old trailing arms cut the ends off i still have them acutally i had a hard time finding 3 inch longer u bolts. but as i recall ed at mother truckers sells them i had bought springs since then so i didnt need blocks anymore. if you want to see pics let me know .

I have a set of lowering blocks that I would sell if you want them. Brand new never used or installed. I believe it comes with the U-bolts with the blocks. Haven't looked at em in so long I cant remember. But I think they did.

Ft Worth Champion spring on Henderson street will build U-bolts for you while you wait for 30 per pair.

You cab build them, but why? They are so cheap to buy from PEP Boys that it's not really worth your time...

The Pep Boys one won't work on a coil spring 67-72 truck. They're for leaf spring applications.

Aaaah, that makes sense. I'm just used to leaf spring rear ends. I sometimes forget what forum I am responding in.... :p

SweetandLong68 05-25-2004 08:24 PM

But the ones from Autozone will. :) A buddy of mine lowered the rear of his 68 CST with the same blocks that I have. I am going Bags and not going to use them.

I wrode in it after he cut the front springs one coil a put the blocks on the rear and it didnt ride bad at all. I was expecting much worse. All that spring travel that these trucks have I guess.

Blocks

I built mine out of 2" solid stock and drilled 13/16" holes on a lathe for the "U" bolts.http://img12.photobucket.com/albums/...uck/image1.jpgg[/IMG]

thanks for the help fellas. i have one more question. how much longer should my new U bolts be. should i just take out the old ones, measure them, and then add two inches? I was thinking of taking 2" x2" steel tubing and then cutting two holes in it and reinforcing them with round tubing and then capping off the ends. Do you think that would be strong enough.

thanks, 67pro-street

Tx Firefighter 05-26-2004 08:00 AM

Here's what I did. Just tubing that I capped the ends on.

My local parts store don't sell blocks that are even close to working. They are intended for leaf springs and come with 4 small diameter U bolts and the blocks have locating pins on them.

SWINGSAX68 05-26-2004 02:15 PM

So....I'm guessing you sit a jack under the trailing arm and lower it after you break loose the ubolts??? Or how do you do it???
Sorry to butt in.....but it is a question that needs to be asked.....just minor details I guess...:)
