Column shifter sloppy
 

As there any way to tighten up the shifter? Sloppy and yhe wife has problems understanding the truck is not in "D" when it only shifts to second...

figured I'd ask before I tear into it.

i was wondering if there is an easy fix for it also??

Replace the bushings in the linkage. there is a link going from the base of the column to the trans, it has a bushing at each end that is most likely gone. replace them and it should be worlds better.

where would you find a bushing in good condition? seems like all the junker ones's would be worn out.

Get them at the Chevy dealer.

Sounbds good except the nearest dealer to me 5,500 miles!!!! Gonna reach here but if anybody has a P/N please give me and I'll have a buddy get them for me. He is not real car savvy but if he has a number he's a whiz.

Might also be an adjustment problem. The local Chevy dealer said their computer only goes back to '77, and that grommet is discontinued anyway. www.mothertruckers.net (parts selector) shows an auto trans shift bushing under "misc. parts". That might be it. Then again, you might find one on an abandoned military truck somewhere :D

Thanks. Shoot, you will not see any old abandoned military trucks on today's bases. As a matter of fact, been that way for many years. And even if you did, you'd risk your career for taking something. Old times are long gone.

There is a HP publication called 350 hydromatic which explains in detail adjusting the linkage which if left sloppy can burn up bands. So it is important...I imagine there is such a book for 400 turbos too....

Talk to Piston about tightening the linkages up. He used some tubing and ingenuity to fix his.

First off, do you still have the spring and washer at the end of the steering shaft and the intermediate shaft? This has been missing in half the trucks I get. It is the only thing that keeps the column from pulling out towards the driver. It also puts tension on the shifter detents. You can sometimes get a little more presure by adjusting this.

Next place to look is the pivot point at the frame. It is an ungreased point and every time you shift it is metal on metal. The hole will oval out and cause much of the slop. Find a washer that fits the pivot and weld it on to take up the slack again.

Re-adjust the down rod and you are set to go again.

What would I look for if the slop is only the shift lever. Just put a CPP linkage on a 6L80 and can hardly feel the detents. Feels too tight
