Valve Lash - Push Rods ?
Should you be able to spin the push rod with your fingers after you have tightened the rocker nut?
I took off one of my rockers, springs, etc. to check the seal; it seemed ok. Anyway I am putting it back together and following the directions in the service manual and Swervin Ervin's directions. My question is should the rod be able to spin? The one I just adjusted the lash on spins when I turn it with my finger tips. Its in tight and wont lift up or down at all, but does spin around. When comparing to some of the others; some spin and some dont. thanks |
When the pushrod just gets some resistance on it while spinning, this is zero lash. Go another 1/2 turn and call it good.

Thats what I did, but they still spin, is that ok?
I guess what I am asking is, can the push rod still spin if adjusted properly? Edit: For future reference, I tend to make a big deal and ask a lot of questions about things I am unsure of. Also when working on something I am unsure of I tend to think everything might be going wrong. I guess I am paranoid :) |
Yes, if the valve upon which the push rod is actuating is not currently held open by the camshaft, the pushrod will still spin. If it is open at the time you are checking it, it would be very difficult to get it to spin.

yeah, what he said.

Thanks evryone, I just wasnt sure if that was a bad sign or not. Adjusting valves is always something I have wondered about and thought it was more complicated.
thanks again |
