Anyone see this?

Got the transmission and transfer case put in today. Had to move the crossmember forward an inch and a half. Now the front drive shaft looks too long. I went from a 3 speed to a 4 speed and 221 transfer. Anyone had the same experience? Wondering if I'll have to have the drive shaft shortened. Rear shaft isn't in yet, so don't know if it will fit either. Thanks, Jeff.

I changed from a 3 speed to a 4 speed using the same 221 and didn't have to change anything or move the crossmember. The length difference is kept the same by changing the adapter length. Not sure why you had a difference. Did you stay with the 221 or was the 3 speed hooked to something else?

No the 3 speed had another transfer case on it. I got the 221 with the 4 speed from LeRoy. When I measured I thought they were the same, but like I said I had to shift forward about an Inch and a half. Guess I'll just have the front shaft shortened and hope the rear will work. If not I may have to have it lengthened. Have you had any trouble out of the 221? I have heard they are good, but not used this one yet. Jeff.

You probably had the 3 speed/dana 20 transfer case, which would explain why it was a different length. As for the Rockwell, the one that was in my truck served me well for 1 year. However, one of my output seals went bad and a slow drip started. I guess it grew overnight, and one day as I was driving it, it started to clank really bad. Took it out and discovered that all the bearings were shot, there were some balls floating around in the gear oil and the oil itself was a silver color from metalflakes. Also, the coupler sleeve between the tranny and transfer was almost completely worn smooth inside, and the tranny's rear output is toast.
I am still undergoing the everlasting NP205 swap now, i had to move the crossmember back about that length to make it fit.

Hmm. Well, hope I don't have your luck. I did notice that the tranny output and transfer input do have some wear, but I didn't think it was too bad. Wonder how much it'll be to have them overhauled? Or if they can be. Whats so hard about the 205 swap? Other than the crossmember swap? Jeff.

The NP205 swap isn't hard at all, I just have not had time to work on my truck in a long time. I am not sure yet if the rear driveshaft will need changed, but im pretty sure the front is too long. Ok, I guess drilling the new holes in the frame was hard...but I used a DeWalt battery powered angle drill. Finding a 465/205 adaptor can be hard to do too, I was quoted around $200 for just the adaptor  But a free 465/205 combo fell into my lap, so it was kinda nice.

Congrats on that! Thats how the 465/221 was too. LeRoy had it out of one he was parting and let it go fairly cheap. Just hope it will last. Whats different about the 205? Does it not go right on the back of the 465? Guess not if you need an adaptor. Guess I will start pricing drive shaft mods. I'll have to cut the front down an inch or two and add an inch or two to the rear. Moving the crossmember wasn't hard on mine. Just moved forward 1.5 inches and drilled new holes. The hard part has been getting the shock mounts in to the transfer case.

No problems with the T221 in my 69 K20.
