too much play in power steering
I have a 98 4.3L Z-71
I recently changed my power steering pump, box and lines. I have two problems: 1. I have a loud whine when I have the engine over approx. 2100 RPMS. The parts were shipped with a preservative that foams up. I think I need to flush the power steering fluid, but not sure. 2. I have way to much play in the steering and was wondering how to tighten it up. Its almost scary the amount of play I have in it. Any help would be nice. |
A power steering problem will not add play to the steering (as in you turn the wheel and the wheels don't turn). You need to get under the truck and check for worn idler arm, pitman arm, steering box, tie rod ends, etc...
On a side note, could you look in your glovebox and confirm whether there is the RPO code Z71 on the sheet. There is an ongoing argument on another board about this. |
I know there is something in the box that is causing it. I can grab the steering shaft and turn it by hand and the wheels wont turn. I did checks on everything underneath and found nothing wrong. Is there an adjustment on the steering box to tighten the gear on the inside?

If there is something loose inside the box it is bad. Needs to be replaced.

Sounds like it might be the EVO sensor, located under the dash at the bottom of the steering colum....I had lots of play in my 99 yukon and this was the problem.
