door hinges

ok guys ive got a question. im trying to get my hinge pins out of my door hinges so i can install new ones but im having a hard time trying to knock them out. is there an easy way in doing this. i ground the pointed end off flush with the rest of the hinge but still no movement in the pin when i hit it. any help would be appreciated

I can sum it up in one word...Pneumatics. Buy yourself a cheap (or good) air hammer/chisel & they usually come w/ a few chisels.

Hit it w/ that & be patient. It'll just sit there hammering, hammering, hammering, & then all of a sudden it starts to move. WD-40 & about 2-3 days time helps too.

You'll need another small rod (like a center punch for driving finishing nails flush) b/c the chisel will be too bid to chase the hinge pin the entire way.

when I did mine I had to beat the krap outa them with a 5lb hammer. I added heat from a propane torch & that made them go easier.

Good advice, heat is our friend!!!!! Also sound advice penetrating oil and some time.
I found Kroil works better than wd-40. As I am a farmer I deal with rust on equipment
all the time. Good luck with hinge repair, Mike

We put them in a vise and heat them with a torch and knock the pins out with a long carriage bolt.

I had to use a press to get my pins out. Tried using a hammer and punch, just broke the punch....
