my truck smokes :(

in the second video, you can see it smoke whenever i rev it up :( i checked all the plugs and they all looked great. from what i see, it only does it when its in park and idling and i rev it like that. it doesnt smoke while i'm driving either.

Thats called blowby!! when oil blows by the rings!!

Grande Rojo 12-09-2004 10:54 PM

ocbaud I've got a killer short block I'll sell you :D

Goodys86 12-09-2004 11:10 PM

Do you have to add oil very often? From what I could tell it doesn't look that bad. Also, I have a video of my truck if anyone wants to host it.

My new 327 was doing something similar, it turned out to be the adjustment of my holley that was causing the proble's. I got it tuned up and havent had any more problems.

Msybe it needs the patch

my 355 did this when i built it in '98. i didnt have the time, or the money to tear it down and fix it. so i let it go. 7000-8000 miles later, it stopped. someone told me that it was the rings seating against the cylinder bores.

MylilBowTie 12-10-2004 12:46 AM

I would try a very complete compression test of the engine. This will tell you a little more about what its doing. I might be over looking it but it doesn't look like much smoke at all to me.

low 84 12-10-2004 12:56 AM

a compression test won't really tell you anything unless there is a large difference in numbers cylinder to cylinder. you need to do a leakdown test if you want to check the rings.

MylilBowTie 12-10-2004 01:09 AM

Yes I forgot to add the more important of the two tests.

ocbaud 12-10-2004 01:59 AM

like i said, it only does it while i'm idling and not moving, i've had friends following me and they tell me that they dont see any smoke come out when i get on the gas hard.

whenever it is idling there is small amounts of fuel coming out of the exhaust, the carb is running way rich and will be until christmas when i get my pressure regulator.

James670X 12-10-2004 02:07 AM

I'm assuming your truck is carbureted?. From the looks of it I'd say it's running a little rich.

a lot rich, but only at idle.

the edelbrock carb doesnt like more than 5.5psi MAX at idle and my fuel pump puts out between 6-9 psi at idle.

James670X 12-10-2004 03:07 AM

Blowby would make the tips of your spark plugs oily.
Have you considered buying a pyrometer or egt gauge?

ocbaud 12-10-2004 03:23 AM

all of my plugs looked just like this:

thoes plugs look like the motor is rich. from what i can tell from the vid, the smoke is black, not blue. i think you should be fine when you get that fuel pressure regulator. or re jet your carb

i cant ever see the smoke since i'm in the cab with my foot on the gas. the truck smells very rich though. and i wouldnt be able to tell if it was blue or white or what not since i'm color blind :(

low 84 12-10-2004 09:31 AM

it most likely does it while your moving too, the smoke just dissipates into the air quickly when the truck is moving. when its stationary like that it just makes it easier to see. it doesn't really look like enough to worry about to me. get your carb dialed in and it might take care of it

ocbaud 12-10-2004 01:48 PM

i have some people on another forum telling me that my plugs look like they are running VERY lean??

phantom dually 12-10-2004 07:42 PM

Lean would be alot more white on the plug.
