Opening up the steering box?
 

I am completing a frame off resto/mod on my 70 c 10 lwb.

As far as I can tell my steering box is in good shape. I want to replace all the grease inside the box. Should I just remove the 3 bolts on top of the box? Are there any spring loaded parts that will "jump" out if I remove this top section? Does anyone have a good procedure for replacing the grease in the steering box, it is a manual steering box.

Unless you completely dissassemble th box, getting the grease out will be almost impossible. Removing the cap is ok to do, no springs!

I would suggest removing two of the four cover bolts, (one diagonally from the other). Using a grease gun with a tapered rubber tip, purge the box by pumping into one hole and letting the grease come out the other hole.

As Jim said, the only way to get all the old grease out is to completely disassemble the box, scrub everything clean, and reassemble it.

Just watch those ball bearings. There are 50 of 'em & they love to roll across the floor to hide in inaccessible places. (Voice of experience here)

:agree: Think of opening a box of little compressed springs. OK, maybe not quite that bad. Last time I did this I took it apart in a large bucket just to make certain I didn't lose any.
