Edelbrock ?
A friend let me try his Edelbrock 1407 carb in place of the Q-Jet.The truck starts,idles and accelerats much smoother than the Q-Jet. It does have a slight bog at hard acceleration but it may be running a little lean. What It doen't have is the same BHAAAWAAA or the kick in the pants that the Q-Jet had when the secondaries opened.
I feel a 750 cfm may be a little large for a motor that is as mildly built as mine ( see sig) but should I expect more from the Edelbrock? I suspect that the secondaries may not be opening. Is there a procedure for checking to see that they are functioning without staring in to the carb at full throttle? thanks in advance steve |
You'll never get the same 'kick in the pants' feel from the Edelbrock as you did from the Q-jet, just compare the secondaries. ;)
The Edelbrock has a weighted set up on the secondaries, the bottem plates will open at W.O.T. (as long as the choke is off) but the 'flaps' will only give what your motor is asking for. Kinda like vacuum secondaries only different. :crazy: |

Howdy:
I'm getting ready to install one of those Edelbrock carbs myself, in this case a 1405 (600 cfm) that I bought used. Going on a low compression 350 with ram's horn exhaust manifolds. My past experience with QJets has been good, but all on stock engines, where the carb was factory tuned to work well with that specific combination. The "vacuum cleaner" sound from under the hood when the accelerator was floored,and the T400 kicked down into passing gear was something to hear. When I switched ( being young and ill informed at the time, LOL) to a Holley 650 spread bore with mechanical secondaries ( 'cause it was listed as a direct "QJET replacement" that would fit the stock intake), it , of course, bogged when suddenly fed too much air. The other part of the problem was that I had not made a required adjustment of the T400 kickdown switch to suit the throttle position of the different carb. Fixing THAT helped regain the boot in the pants, which was, of course, from the trans kicking down into passing gear. Just a few things to consider. I have found that the 1405 I have has been tuned to give a richer mixture than my mild engine needs; it will be jetted back to where Edelbrock had it as a starting point. The 600 cfm size is probably more than this engine will use, but, the "Air Valve Secondary" system is a good one, and will not give more than the engine demands(up to the flow capacity of the carb);the Qjet uses a variation of this design, as did other Rochester 4bbls, and of course the Carter AFB carbs,(though the Carter ThermoQuad had the Air Valve above the secondary discharge nozzles, more like the QJet does) which the Edelbrock's are a redesign of. I like my Eldebrock stuff but I love my Q-Jet setup too. They both have their disadvantages and advantages.

i go with edelbrock carbs i like the fact its plug and play carb and adjusting the jets cant be any easier to swap plus have you seen vics daughters they rock

the AFB-type(Edelbrock) has large primaries, and small secondaries. The Q-jet is opposite.

1405 Edlebrock and Performer 2101 Intake
Just finished installing today on my 62'. I am running a 350 SB with a TH350 couldn't be happier. Was running a stock intake and Qjet. Whole different truck, smooth idle and cruising, but runs like a raped ape/scalded dog when you get on it and the th350 kicks down, pulls hard all the way through.
bought the 1405 used, tanked it, bought a rebuild kit, rebuilt it, installed and dialed in. Easiest install and adjustment yet. :metal: |
