HEI Timing
 
For you folks with a hei on your smallblocks. What do you have you idle timing set to?

What are you running in your SBC: cam, carb, intake, heads, etc

I've got mine set at 6, 400 small block, 5.7 rods, crane 268 cam

Crate 350 260 hp. Stock. Carb is a qjet. Intake is a edelbrock 2101.

Settings would be the same for points distributors or HEI distributors for initial timing. We set our small blocks at 10-12 degrees BTDC with the engine idling and the vacuum advance disconnected.

8 degrees BTDC is a good starting point. From there you can bump it up as long as there is no spark knocking and it does not hold back on the starter when trying to start.
