Going flat black again...maybe?
 

OK, I know my rig ain't getting painted properly anytime in the near future...WAY too many things in the way for that. The gold and gray promer really looks like crap IMO.
Almost 2 years ago, i put my old GMC in black primer. Yes, it was rattle can, and after a couple months, it too looked like crap. Not to mention the absorbing of water deal that most all primers do.
So i was thinking, (uh oh) I want something that is semi flat or very semi gloss... thinking like that electricly aplied stuff on replacement parts, maybe a tad flatter than that.
Rustolium is cheap.
Rustolium helps to prevent rust, or at least does not promote it like sponge primer.
Rustolium is 10 times more durable than primer.

If anyone has a [b]CHEAP[/i] idea better than Rustolium, I'm all ears. I'm not talking $100 budget here...I'm talking a Mc Burger and fries buget...small fries at that, and a glass of water.

Now, questions...
What percentage of flat and of gloss would I have to mix for this? I was thinking lik 50/50.
What would I thin the paint with? (to be sprayed through a proper (but cheapo) paint gun)


I DO know that when it comes time for real paint, that all this crap will have to come off.
In all reality, that is about the only disadvantage I can come up with.

I hope that i can bump into some one with the tallent of laying out flames.....(I wonder if Tim will be in my neck of the woods anytime soon?) but a semi flat black paint job with the white bumpers, grill, roof and wheels will have to do. Not sure what old school sticker I should go with this time...too many woody wood pecker comments last time, so Mr Horse Power is out of the question. Probably the moon eyes or rat fink.

Please feel free to attach pics of truck done up somethign like this. I've always wanted flames, but I still have plenty of years to have a fire truck like that.
I'll start with my old beater.

go borrow a paint gun and buy a gallon of paint from a paint store. it will hold up a lot better and if you can spray decent with rattle cans you should be able to do decent with a spray gun

I can paint with a gun...it's been over a decade, but I did a few in the body shop at tech school durring my jr and sr years.
One of the rerasons I want to go with flat-ish paint is that it is obviouse that it is not a final paint.... a work in progress. If I put real paint on it, I'll lose sleep if I paint over rust holes or dents. And that kind of body work don't fit in the mc'budget.

you could always buy a gallon of flat paint. hell even sealed primer would be better than most rattle can paints. the automotive primer in gallon form isnt a sponge like the rattle can stuff because the rattle can stuff has anti drying agents in it to stop it from drying in the can

Go for it and if you can't find a booth to paint in, spray it outside. With flat it will turn out ok. Black epoxy would be good.

Hey check the paint and body forum. Member >X< has some John Deere Blitz Black to give away. Lots of ol skool hot rodders use it for the flat black look

If the paint give-away does not work out, go with the rustoleum. If you have access to a paint gun, a gallon of rustoleum is only around $25.00 and should be enough to do your truck and inside the bed. I painted a 81 Chevy 4x4 that was mostly surface rusted from one end to the other. I also had a few dents to fix. I bought one can of bondo and told my wife, once it was gone, I was done doing body work. I got just about all the dents fixed and ground down all the rust spots the best I could get them cleaned up. I primered the whole truck with gallon of Rustoleum rust fighting primer and then painted it red. That paint held a shine for almost a year. The rust was just starting to come back through when I got rid of the truck five years later.
I probably had well under $100 in materials for this and ended up with a fairly decent looking truck.

I also did the same thing to my daughter's 1990 S-10 Blazer. One can of bondo and one can of Rustoleum blue got that thing looking pretty spiffy.

but go to NAPA and ask for a gallon of "Flat Black Commercial Coatings" and a gallon of the reducer.

I think the Paint Part# is 6040 or 6036 (one is the Paint and one is the Reducer but i don't remember which is which)

THe paint should be about $40 and the Reducer should be about $20

And it looks pretty good.....

If it was me, I'd do the JD Blitz Black and call it good.

I like that napa stuff there...is that flat, or semi flat? Washing primer really sucks after a rain storm, the mud gets soaked into the coarse surface.

Andy, I have been spraying Dupont DP90 and it is clearly the easiest primer/paint I have ever worked with. Read the tech sheet and mix as directed. I have been using a gravity HVLP gun (inexpensive) and spraying outside using a charcoal cannister (organic vapor) North respirator. Not even sure I need it but it is there for double protection. Semi-gloss looks great!

i have used some stuff from TSC that is called..take a wild guess... semi-gloss black... about $10 a gallon, and you use Naptha to reduce it. i painted the K20s frame with it and the only problems i had were where i didnt get the frame clean, otherwise it didnt peel anywhere. it only took 3 gallons to paint a 16 ft cattle trailer we have. its been sitting cab-less for about a year now and still not faded or had any problems

I have a friend that did a flat black from the local JD dealer,and the paint was around $20,might be worth a phonecall to the JD dealer.

Andy, Forget about the Dupont DP90. It is a two-part epoxy and with reducer and catalyst it will cost you about $135-$150. I am not sure a gallon will cover one truck!

I vote for the JD Blitz black... my brother used it on the botom half of his car... relatives of mine had experience with the rustoleum flat black going chalky after a short time...

whatever you do, don't get wax on the flat black... makes it look like crap (unless you use wax remover)....

Yep....Goes on like primer...hard to run it levels nicely, i'd use it again.

It is a Flat Paint..not Semi. It is actually called Flat Black :metal: AND you can wash it. I've washed it about 3 times now (cause it gets filthy sitting around in the shop) and it still looks good.

I like it - it came good for an amature job. it's no show piece but i'm happy with it.

Here is another shot from the side...might be able to see the color a little bit better.

Its for sale buy the way. I'll get complete pictures of it this weekend @ the Adirondack Nationals in Lake George, NY. Hopefully I can sell it there. I need to scrape some cash up for other projects and bills
