Messed up my door handle :whine:
 

Can someone describe how to fix my door handle button? I've got a '68 that the exterior button on my door is pushed in and won't come out. It's also flopping around in there. I've take the door panel off and found no pieces laying the the bottom of the door. I've got an assembly manual but can't find a page that has an exploded drawing of the mechanism. What should I be looking for to put back together? I've got access to a '71 parts truck that has a good door handle, is it the same as the '68? thanks!

There is a small metal part (like a square plate...but small) that has a hole in it to guide the button in a straight line in and out, and it holds the pressure on the spring so the button pops back out at you. That tab will break off if the inside is rusted a little. Held in place by little bent metal tabs. Usually just easier to replace the handle. I see plenty of owners poking their fingers through the hole to open the door!!!

They are the same. There should be a spring and a plate sitting in the bottom of your door though. Unless you take the time to drill and pin the plate back in place, fixing the old one will be a waste of time. It will brake again shortly therafter. The 71 will work. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

I don't think it would be a waste of time to fix. It is real easy. The trick is to not try and bend it too much. I have probably repaired around 20 of these and not lost a single patient. If you have a replacement handle just change it out and practice on the old one. You have nothing to lose.

Thanks everyone. I got the handle off my parts truck, it was in great shape. Got it put on, works great. Tried to fix my old one, broke it in less than 30 seconds :(

yeah...i got new ones....real easy fix if its not rusted to pieces. good to see you got another.
