Harmonic Balancer Big Block Question

1 Attachment(s)
I'm trying to pull this part off a big block 72 motor and have never done anything like this before. When looking at the front there are 4 bolts... one down the center which apparently bolts to the shaft and three smaller bolts in a triangle. When I pulled the three smaller bolts out the front pulley came off. I then pulled the center bolt out and expected the rest to slide off the shaft, but the balancer and pullies are still steadfast. I'm trying to get it off without damaging the the pullies or the timing cover behind it!

Any ideas? Does this look familar to anyone? The orange ring behind the pullies is the harmonic balancer right?? Thanks, Chris

Re: Harmonic Balancer Big Block Question

Ok, if you removed the three outside bolts but left the center bolt on, the pulleys are just stuck due to time and road grime. Smack 'em with a hammer and they will break free. Or some that I've seen are 1 piece and can't be taken apart.
The center bolt holds your harmonic balancer on the crank. Remove that bolt. Then use a harmonic balancer puller WITH INSTRUCTIONS to remove the harmonic balancer.

Your almost there did mine on my 454 1980 you need to rent/ buy a harmonic balancer remover a good one. and it is used to install the balancer with a roller washer. the problem I had with the 80 and my not be with the older motor is the three small bolts were metric so check the three small thread for a match when it is time to screw them in to pull from. Are Autozone rents the tool for free and it was a great quality tool. have since bought the tool kit will do power steering pumps also. Ed ke6bnl

Thanks for the replies, Today I'm going to try to find a harmonic balancer puller at one of my local auto parts stores. Members of the board save the day again!

Re: Harmonic Balancer Big Block Question

now ask your neighbor for a installer when you go back together dont use a 2x4 and hammer only reason is you can damage the bearings from smacking the crankshaft
