Help, Three on the tree problems......

My truck just started acting up on friday. It won't stay in third gear. I drove it home in second gear mostly. Is the tranny toast or is something loose? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like the old saginal tranny`s 3rd gear syncro is toast.not to hard a fix if you are mechanicaly inclined......or just find a saginal 4 speed ...they are found in monzas, skyhawks, sunbirds, compact mid 70`s GM rear wheel drive,Sid

Might try adjusting the 2-3 shift rod (hooks to the front-most lever on the trans). But first, check the bushings in the shift linkage. If they're shot, it might not push it all the way into gear, which can cause it to pop out.

Edited to correct front/rear error.

GM dealer will have the bushings.

Jimfulco, the 2-3 lever is the front one on the trans, the rear is the 1-R lever.

I got some bushings at Oreily's. They were in the red HELP section and were for a ford but were basically the same. My tranny was hanging up and sticking too. Afterwards has been basically no problems.
