I got a PM asking this, and I (think) I have it down...but was unable to put it into words....

What is the differance between a bog and a stumble?

I think a bog is a more severe form of stumble ??? Like maybe when it bogs, it doesn't hit on any cylinders for a while, a stumble is less severe, like maybe it hits on a few holes, for a shorter time, then recovers ???

i always thought a bog is when it was firing on all cylinders but the RPM's are low so it's running really "chunky" whereas a stumble would constitute misfiring or backfiring.

shoot me if i'm wrong.

When I go 4-wheelin' I bog the engine down when climbing hills sometimes (too steep!). When my buddies get water in their distributors from muddin' their engines stumble.

well ok, let me clerify.... bogging I am refering to is more like an off the line bog, when you are running too rich.... a stumble is supposed to be when you're too lean.
How does one tell a bog from a stumble?

This is how I see what you are asking. A bog is when the engine is getting more fuel than the RPMs can compensate for. (which is basically what towrig is saying in his particular case. (too high of a gear for the RPMs) A stumble is more of a lean condition problem, because you stomp the gas, and it takes a second for the fuel delivery system to catch up to the needs of the engine at a particular RPM. If I was going to describe it in a "sound",(don't laugh) it would be the difference between a "bowah"(bog) and a "phitwah"(stumble) You said you wouldn't laugh.... Here's my take...

Stumble=lasts only a second, comes out of it, without getting out of the throttle.

Bog=Continues to pull down until you get out of the throttle.

Does that make sense to anyone besides me?

Bogging to me is working extremely hard, but not getting anywhere, while a stumble is going like crazy, but misfiring for a second or something.
