Steering box
Ok gurus out there. Is there a difference between a 2wheel drive and a four wheel drive steering box on a 72 blazer? This is the ongoing brainstorming of whether to convert my 4x4 to a 4x2 or not. Trying to work through the steering problems I might encounter.

Re: Steering box
Yes they are different.

Re: Steering box
Yap I think they turn in opposite directions. When you go to cross over steering you have to change to a 2 wheel drive box.

Re: Steering box
So then does a 2wd steering box mount in the same position? I have a 76 2wd pickup frame with the front and rear suspension, tranny crossmember, tie rods and such but no steering box. I can get one at the local junkyard without any problem.

Re: Steering box
Yap it will bolt right in no mods needed.

Double check the column shaft for excess play before you but it, seals can be replaced / rebuilt, I would be concerned about play. |
Re: Steering box
Use a steering box off of a 80-87, they are less turns lock to lock. Nice.

Re: Steering box
A2wd box rotated side to side while the 4wd box rotates front to back..

Re: Steering box
The only differences between the two gear boxes is the output shaft. When converting to crossover steering you can swap in the 2wd sector shaft and away you go. I have all my boxes built by Benchworks steering in scottsdale arizona. 1-480-946-3992.
A few other points to ponder.....mid 76 the ratio's of the boxes changed....and somewhere around 78-79...the lines changed from a compression fitting to an o-ring (teflon) seal. The reason i recommend benchworks is i lived in phx for 12 years and drove by the atsco rebuild plant everyday...benchworks is a small shop that hand builds each unit....i like quality of quantity. They rebuilt my 4x box...added the 2wd sector shaft and ported the box for a hydraulic ram for $225. Cheaper than AGR...and better quality. Doug W. |
