Bare Bones 67 LWB Project
 

Well I hope I'm in the right place, I have a 67 Chev 1/2 steel long bed, I6, 700r4,2wd. The Truck was purchased by my wife's Grandfather and has been in the family since new. Her brother took the truck to a "backyard mechanic" and swapped the 3speed for the AT. It does run but the install looks likes hell.
So now it is my turn. The truck is in great condition and I want to make it a nice daily driver. I just don't know where to start. I do know that the I6 is coming out and a V8 is going in. 350 or 400 not sure yet? Will a late model (80's) 4X4 running gear fit under the 67? Will a tilt column from a late model fit? I have a chance at a donor 85 1500 4X4 and thought this might be a viable solution for spare parts. Any help will be appreciated Thanks Stu

Welcome to the board.If you are asking if a 80s (late model frame will swap out with a 67 cab and bed,I don't think so.There are many here who are way more knowledgable than I and can answer your questions.Good luck on your project and we like pics if you got any of your truck.

Thanks I guess I should be specific. Ya the idea of using the donor truck crossed my mind but i don't yet have both here to do any measuring. I thought I would ask, just looking for the easy way out lol. If the frame width and wheel base is close I thought it might be doable. (with some work). If not I'll just go with a nice 2wd driver. This truck is an Oklahoma native and has very few miles, new paint but not the best job. I just hate to see deteriorate. It needs some TLC. Oh ya I do have a disc brake kit for the frt. not sure what is there supposed to be complete. I'm guessing I'll need power booster. I'll get pics this Christmas when I go get it. The frame swap in possible, but will require some fabrcation. I've never done it, but was looking into it and decided to wait. MUDDER67 had some great info about it. Maybe pm him. The tilt idea is a waste in my opinion. I did it with a '78 impala column. You have to hack to column and the gauge bezel. Sounds like a great project. Keep us informed.

Van tilts are pretty easy to install. Check out our FAQ Submission page, the Index thread makes finding the info you want a little easier.

Let's see the 67 from OKLA. Not many get past me. Got 3 parts 67's and 2 original old 67's.

Thanks for the info. I know most, if not all my questions have been answered before I just got too lazy lol .I have a 71 Lemans that Im working on and this will be my first attempt at a Chevy PU. I suppose now I'll become a regular here. David H the truck was driven to Dallas a month ago 1st time outa state. It has spent its life in Ada and Meeker the last 4 years. SDkid Thanks for the info. I don't want to hack it up so I look into the Van tilt that Krue talked about. Will have pics the end of the month

The decision is yours, but personally I say keep the I6....its a nice little engine, and there is the ability to get good hp and tq numbers out of the engine. I just bought a built 250 with headers, intake, 327 forged pistons and rods, balanced crank, roller aluminum rockers, and high compression head for a steal.....dare to be different! (plus, keeping the engine is more $$$ you can put toward other parts of the truck)
2wd with a 700r4 and an I6, with some decent gears should make for some very respectible mpg numbers too!

Clifford or offenhauser, there are a couple other companies....but they escape me at the moment.
www.cliffordperformance.net this is a good place to start, if you start with a good block, the cost of buying a basic 350 will likely be about the same as buying the performance parts for the I6.
Ebay always seems to have a recently rebuilt 250 or 292 for sale...there was a machine shop in IL that had a completely rebuilt 250 for $400 a couple of weeks ago that no one bought, saves on hunting down conversion parts, and makes for a great foundation to build a performance motor.
just checked, and there is one on ebay for $200 right now, not sure if I can post the link, but just search for chevy 250 and it will come up...shipping shouldn't be too bad.

A couple of my 67's had 6's in them and I will going to 8 in at least one of them. The reason. A straight 6 truck in these parts no matter how nice won't resell like it would if it had an 8. I watched this several times on trucks and people I knew. They were scratching their heads people looking would say "if it was only a 8cyl."
I looked into buidling a 292 and it's a bit more than a stock-mild rebuild(flat-tops, perform cam can be done for around $600-700here), and that was a stock 292 adding goodies and the price goes way up. I'm keeping the 292 for a truck to be used like a mule.

I know a cat that lives in sugar grove... he used to work here...WAY too much of a commute with a '78 slant 6 with 300,000 mile 4X4. (he was an idiot anyways)

hey helidoc, regarding performance parts for the 250, if you are still looking into it. Stovebolt.com is another good site, lots of good used performance parts for the man on the budget! (yeah, that would be me!).
