Hook up the Gen. Light?
Howdy!
I want to hook up the Gen. Light to work beside the Battery gauge.(they both have benifits I find) Looking at the wiring blueprint the Gen light works from a 16/20 gauge BRN wire from the volt Reg. to the bulb on the cluster? Can I just hook a bulb up with the + going to the brn on the Volt Reg. and the - grounded?? Cheers and Thanks! |
Re: Hook up the Gen. Light?
You'll need a positive wire on both ends of the bulb, but honestly I can't remember exactly how it goes.

Re: Hook up the Gen. Light?
On the printed cirsut it is + brown and - in grounded.
Something in the volt reg must send + when the Alt stops???? |
Re: Hook up the Gen. Light?
to make it effective...you need:
[IGN +12V] --> [bulb] --> [alt] If the alternator fails, it grounds itself turning on the light. You need the 12V from an ignition source or you wont be able to turn off your engine with the key as the alternator will always be "excited" This set up is for a new style 3-wire alternator. check out www.madelectrical.com for better info and diagrams. |
Re: Hook up the Gen. Light?
I have the 3 wire alt.
Not sure where to run the wires?? |

Re: Hook up the Gen. Light?
I assume you mean the internal regulator GM style.
If you don't have a 2 wire connector for the regulator you can buy one at NAPA. The larger red wire goes straight to the stud that the battery feed wire goes to. the smaller white wire goes to the bulb. The bulb will need 12V KO on one side, the other side goes to the white wire of the reg. With KOEO, the reg is grounded and the gen light will illuminate. KOER, the white wire is not grounded (as long as the alt. is working) and the gen light is off. I'll bet the origional system worked the same. If you have a wiring schematic and trace it down, you can tap off the OEM wiring at the old regulator. |
