Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
SO I need a diagram for reassembly of the vent windows...I didnt take them off my buddy did that tinted the windows. ?? Help? thanks!
Also...I have a horrible fumes/ gas smell in the cab when its running. It almost looks smoky in there when you let it idle. What could be causing this?? |
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
Problem One solved. Still need assistance on what might be causing the fumes in the cab...its really bad and makes you have a horrible headache.

Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
Does the exhaust system have any holes in it? Is the blower motor running when it happens?
I dont think it would be the vent window any more than like the window being down would cause. |
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
rust hole around filler tube will cause it.
|
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
No....these are 2 different problems...the windows are fixed. The Gas smell is my concern.
What is the filler tube you are talking about?? its a new exhaust system with dumps...and I never had a problem with my old truck and dumps with smell. |
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
Is the seal around the steering column/firewall in tact? That would be where I'd start.
|
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
I will have to check that out.
|
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
Also check the fuel pump for leaking.
|
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
Ok....So if I move the selector over to OFF and have no vent or heat or air.....NO smell. If I open it, SMELLY TOWN!

Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
Maybe a clogged EGR?
|
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
Its something in the engine bay area, the fan blower is blowing it in the cab. Is there a strong gas smell under the hood without the engine running?
|
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
somewhat..but not bad when not running. Hell its got gosh knows how many miles on a stock 305 haha. Has audible valve problems in the exhaust note but it runs fine. :)

Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
So no one else has this problem?? dang
|
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
If you really get bored. You could rent a fog machine put in the engine and turn it on with the hood almost closed. Then go in the cab and look where its getting in at. Just an idea Ive run out of everything else unless the cab is pretty rotted someplace.

Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
dave, my wifes Maxima had that problem, she had a small fuel leak on top of the engine..
|
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
Yeah...I had a small leak at the carb..but i just fixed that one..so now I am at a loss. :( I guess I could try the fog machine lol.
THe cab has no rot..that is what bothers me. |
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
Sounds like it has got be be a seal somewhere around the airbox. My truck has dumps right at the axle and half the floor rotted out with no carpet or anything and I dont get any smell in mine. I would look at the airbox, maybe someone removed/damaged the seal changing the heater core or blower motor??
|
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
i am sure its coming in the airbox/blower area... the issue should be whats causing the smell...
Dave, how long ago did you fix the fuel problem? could be left over fuel still puddled somewhere? |
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
Its dry..I fixed the leak after it sat for 3 days. Just needed to tighten up a nut. :)
I have a feeling its the blower too...just need to figure out where to seal it up at. Man...its a deathtrap right now lol!!! close the windows and start it up..DEAD. |
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
I got a weird guess but it's worth a shot. The T coming off the back of the intake to pull a vacuum for the heater ball may be leaking exhaust fumes into it.

Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
I have about the same thing you have. I think there may be a little smoke coming from then engine compartment thru the airbox, heater.
When I first got this truck, I wasn't getting any defrost. I was under the dash doing all kinds of things trying to figure out why not(it ended up being a broken vacuum hose on the intake manifold). In the process I was playing with the flapper door cable adjustment. I know for a fact it is not adjusted correctly and does not properly seal, been to lazy to get back under and adjust it correctly. I think this allows some smoky, or exhaust, fumes from the engine compartment into the cab. Because this is my "beater", I just keep the window down a little while I run for a part or something. |
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
I'd check for rust holes around the gasolene filler tube
|
Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
Dave, my 86 had the same smell and it to had several miles on the truck. After I replaced the engine it seems to have disappeared, perhaps greater vaccum to properly close and open the fresh air venting to the a/c. You may want to check the tube going into your blower motor from the case and the blower motor itself, perhaps running a bead of silicone around the base of the motor sealing it.

Re: Re Assembly on Vent window lock? And Fumes in cab??
My passenger side valve cover was leaking in the back and running down the head and made its way to the manifold.
The fan would just blow smoke at the firewall, and with the blower motor on it would come right in. The cab would get kind of cloudy like you mentioned and smell like smoke/fumes. You may not even notice the smoke with a clutch fan moving all the time. Maybe check that out. -Jeremy |
