Vin Numbers and engines

Would a 71 VIN number be stamped on the correct engine either on the front plate under ac or near the oil filter?

should be drivers side rear, just below the cylinder head on the flat casting and yes directly below is the oil filter.

jcfoote, I know there's a casting number on drivers side rear behind the head. Is this what you are talking about?

I am wondering if the VIN was stamped on the engines. My VIN is CE141Z607353. Would some derivative of this be stamped on the engine?

Yes, if it's the orginal engine. You should find it on the machined pad area of the block directly ahead of the right side cylinder head. The block casting # is found on the driver's side behind the head.

NO. VIN numbers were not stamped on truck engines until 1973. There is only a block ID number, which can not connect the engine with a particular truck.
