Install a Factory Tach Cluster??

I bought a Factory tach Cluster on ebay .

Assuming it works... Are the installs pretty straight forward as in Plug in?? I know I'll have to make a tach circuit and, since I have a diesel I'll have to pull it from the VSS on the back of the alternator.

As far as the rest of the wiring is it just a straight plug in?? or will I need to re-pin the connector? The current cluster has gauges now and not idiot lights, it has an 85MPH Speedo and the gas gauge is where the tack is on the one I bought.

Anyone done this swap can give me some tips? Anyone know where I can find a wiring diagram for pulling Tach from the Alternator?

Thanks,

Looks like that one is a 78 - 79 unit, which should be a direct bolt in.

For your tach signal, unfortunately, its a bit more complicated. The alternator will not produce nearly the right signal, but, you can install a newer type of vaccum pump which will have a signal generator on it. You then need to run the signal from the vac pump through a signal ratio modify, then to the tach from there.

I'll PM you the email address of a guy who just recently installed a tach into his turbo 6.2, so he can help you with specific parts you'll need to get.

Thanks! just dropped him an email.

Found a great page at 73-87.com

looks like except for the tach it's a straight bolt in, and I can test the tach on my 85 with a 305.

I did some digging, looks like the pump I need is GM part Number 215-117. Found a picture on partsamerica.com. Looked up a pump for an 87 suburban with a 6.2L and Delco had w/ sensor and W/O Sensor Listed.

As far as I know the 6.2L Vacuum pumps work in the 5.7L.
