which would be easier?

switching the head gaskets IN the truck, (87 jimmy 2.8, v6) or pulling the whole engine and putting in another one, then having the old one to look at/rebuild. it was a strong runner till the head gasket blew. keep in mind, i have a bad back and will only have limited help, with an engine hoist.

I think they'll take about the same time in doing but, I would replace the head gasket instead.

i would replace the head gaskets if the engine is good shape otherwise

IF it is a 4x4 you need to pull the body mount and lift the body 4-6" to get the engine out:( (I learned this after 3 hours of fighten and swearing at the truck to get the engine out)just lift the body up and slide some small 4x4 or 6x6 block between the body and frame.Takes longer but it will save you time and busted knuckles in the end:metal:

the 2wd ones are easier you only need to pull the hood off
