1972 np205 transfer case auto or 4 speed

I just bought a 1972 super cheyenne body on a 4x4 frame that is an automatic. However I have a transfer case that a friend told me was a stick shift? Is there a difference?? I have no transmission yet?? I need to see what trans will work with this transfer case. If not I am thinking about mounting the body on a late model running gear?? Any thoughts?

The transfer case will work with either one if you have the right adapter. Do you have any adapter now? If not look up advance adapters on the web and you will find what you need.

no it won't. the NP205 that came behind the TH350 has a 27 spline male input shaft and sleeve. The NP205 that came behind the SM465 in our era trucks has a male 10 spline input shaft and sleeve. the adapters are different, too.

does any one want to trade a 205 for an autotrans and transfercase or want to sell one?

You might want to do some reading up on NP 205's

Please don't say that too loud, my truck might hear you. It came with a 4 speed from the factory in 1972. It was converted to a th350 with an adapter from advance. I converted it to a th400 last year. It still has the origional np205 transfer case. The th350 adapter has a coupling that joins the two different spline configurations together. When I went to a th400 the adapter came with a new heavier input shaft, gear and bearing for the transfer case. In any event the transfer case can in fact adapt to any of the above trannys cause I did it with over the counter adapters from advance. Other things must be considered such as tranny lenght and rear mount location. But I gaurantee Yall it will work. Thats why I referred him to the advance adapter site.

How much did the adapter cost? Advance is pretty proud of what they make. It would probably be cheaper to find the correct transfer case or input gear than to use that.

Yeah, they think a lot of their stuff. I think I paid $600 for the th400 kit. The only problem is that transfer cases and old truck parts are REALLY scarce around here. I have talked to other people that said they could have saved me money. Isn't that always the way?
