Was 4WD an option in 1963 or 64?

I'm considering buying a 1963 or 64 GMC 3/4 ton supposedly with the original V-6 and 4wd.

Was this available then? What transfer case was used if it was?

Thanks,
Nate

From what I understand, it was...kinda. It was a dealer installed option. IIRC, it used a rockwell t-case, but I'm not positive on that one.

Thanks for the reply... anything in particular to be aware of with these model years? Typical rust spots or mechanical issues, etc?

Can't speak from much experience, but on my fairly rust free 65, it had a bit of rust on the rear of the top of the cab (where it angles back out), one rocker, and one cab corner. Cab corners and rockers are gonna be an issue in any truck, along with door bottoms, fenders, etc. Anything can be fixed with some sheetmetal and a welder, so don't be scared away if it's mostly solid.

Usual rust spots are fenders, rockers, cab corners, drip rail. pretty much the same as the newer ones! I've also heard some horror stories about the area around the windshield being rusted away.

GM started to make their own 4wds in 60 or 61, so a 63 would be a factory truck. On 63s, the wrap around windsheild posts can get rusty, but other than that, it's the same as any other truck, floors, door bottoms, rockers, cab corners, fender bottoms, etc.

Most 60-66s I've seen have some level of rust under the battery effecting the pass-side inner fender and the lower corner of the core-support.

yeah from what i remember it was about the 63's that 4wd was offered from the factory. it wasn't a dealer installed option. I think thats when they came up with the "k" designation for 4wd. ALot of Ohio farmers had them as well as 63 Ford 4wd's I know they had 4wd's in the late 50's but not sure it was a production truck. Might have been.
