Window installation/rope size?

I found the FAQ's on window installation (front or rear) for our trucks but there is not much information about the size of rope/cord that people use to put them in. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thank you in advance.

The glass shop I went to used a cord about the same size as a lawn mower start cord.
Hope this helps.

I used a string about the size you use for making a line, say for setting fence posts.

The entire point of the string is to manipulate the rubber around the channel. You won't want something too big that it doesn't easily move, and you don't want something so small that it rips or tears the rubber. I used string for fence posts like boilrman. It worked well on the front window, but tore the gasket on the back window. Perhaps I got too rough with it..?? Good luck, it's not the easiest of projects. Having someone help you is key also.

I know all about tearing the gasket....:( I tore the crap out of the one that is on there now. I used some parachute cord....not a good choice!

Thanks to all for your feedback!

Try a weedeater line. It is a plastic material and does not grab the rubber like rope or nylon does, slides real well when you lube the gasket with windex, dish soap or whatever. I have tried them all from twine to rope and have had the best performance with no grabbing or tearing with weedeater line.

Thanks Alex...you da man! I'll let you know....I'm still waiting for the new window seal to arrive. What an exercise in futility! I am going to put the original sliding window from the red truck BACK into the red truck.

More like the window seal ripping business! It looks like :cuss: right now!

I'm gonna try the weedeater line as suggested....sounds like it will work good since it will slide easier. :drama:

Well...I got it installed. It was tough. I decided to use some sash cord and it worked OK. Was going to use the weedeater line but only had the stuff with the sharp edges....I never would have gotten the window in without the my wife's help...she is a good helper!!! :metal:

We used venetian blind cord and it worked well.

On a side note, does the rear slider window use the same seal as stock glass? I will be painting mine soon and will need new rubber.

As far as I know, the stock gasket fits the slider and the regular glass.
