PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

i'm gonna drop my truck either 2/4 or 3/5 this winter fall, and am hoping to put on refurbished stock, or near stock wheels ( http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...55#post1787155 ). any help with pictures?

psst...
Go with at least 4-6 drop.

Here's an old pic of your ps'ed truck with around a 4-6 drop.
Add some steelies or smoothies like babyblue's ps'ed truck.
'Retro' off the dealership floor. ;)

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

hhmm.... those smoothies ARE mighty fine lookin... i also like the idea of the wheels being original though. i'm hoping to do a sort of "custom/classic" thing. i would like to shave the handles, and i DEFINATELY need new mirrors, and perhaps shave the handle on the tailgate, all to make it look just a little more smooth, but then i think with the stock wheels (maybe widened in rear? again, cool idea...) and original paint, and a done up but still original looking interior.

and yep, i've still got that pic saved on my computer too... its definately something i'll be keeping for reference...

just a little heads up..i wanted to use stock rally's when i lowered mine.it's a five, seven drop.my a arms rubbed even after grinding the lip.research on the forum showed some get away with it,but i didn't.ended up biting the bullet and getting 17in wheels, and glad i did.

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

I used 2.5" Western Chassis drop spindles with 8" Rally wheels. I had no clearance problems, and did not have to do any grinding to make them fit.

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

boatpuller - i'm not exactly a "pro" with suspension, would this still be a problem (possibly) with a lesser drop? i dont plan on going down to 5/7

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

I think boatpuller is referring to the 3" drop spindles. Some have a slight clearance problem between the lip (or gutter) of the LCA and the rim. How much to grind depends on the diameter and backspacing of the rim. As Slon reported, those that use the 2 1/2" spindles don't have this issue. BTW, you could always step up to a 17" rally or smoothie. Although, I'm not sure anyone offers a truck rally in 17".

BTW, a 8" front and 10" rear wheel setup would look nice.

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

The best way to get your drop is from spindles because they do not affect suspension travel or geometry. My recommendation is to lower it first with spindles, then use drop springs if you want additional drop.

If you go with a stock wheel less than 8" wide, it might interfere with a 2.5" drop spindle, and definitely will with a 3" drop spindle.

I would suggest (but I am biased) that you go with an 8" Rally wheel in the front with 2.5" Western Chassis spindles. I have zero problems with that combo. You could go with 8" or 10" (aftermarket) Rallys on the back since you said in the other thread you want a wide wheel.

If you plan to go with a narrower 15, like a 6" or 7" wide plain steel wheel, you should probably use drop springs to avoid clearance issues. You will lose suspension travel, though, and be limited to narrow tires if you do.

EDIT: Yeah, what he said... :)

8" and 10" would avoid clearance problems you think?

They will with Rally wheels or something with the same offset. The 10" rallys are available aftermarket only, but they were available in 6,7, and 8 inch widths factory (I think).

Slonaker

EDIT: This is all assuming you have the 2.5 inch spindles. I am told that the 3" spindles will clear 8" Rallys with some grinding onthe caliper and/or the lower control arm.

When you know what wheels you want, ask around here and see if anyone is running that particular combo so you will know for sure.

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

The advantage of aftermarket rallys, is your selections of backspacing. With the proper bs (~5") on a 10" rally, you shouldn't have any clearance problems in the rear. Up front, I'd think you need around a 5" bs on a 8" rally to clear the fender lip.

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

does anyone know about what the backspacing is on the stock wheels?

boxrodz 08-23-2006 02:55 PM

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

I believe the stock 15x8s have a 4 1/4" bs.

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

so some 15" smoothies or rallys with 5" backspacing and an 8" in front and 10" in rear huh? and a 5 lug 5" bolt pattern right?

does anyone have any specific wheels they really like that would fit this bill? i've been lookin on summit for a few, and this is the only one i can find that fits these #'s

what say you?

it's a 5" bolt pattern right?

Slonaker 08-24-2006 02:42 PM

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

I think the El Camino uses a different bolt pattern, but the wheel is available in several different bolt patterns from wheel vintiques. Stckton wheel and other probably have them as well.

I think bigblock73 has those on his truck. You might ask him about them, and what parts he used to lower it.

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

i went onto the wheels vintiques website and it looks like i can fit the 33 or 37 series wheels in a 15x10 and a 15x8... i'm leaning towards the 37

:note, i can get all the different caps for those wheels, not just those shown

or i can get smoothies if i step up to 16x10 and 16x8

If you can get a picture of your truck taken at the same angle like that of the wheels you linked, we can p'chopped them on your truck. If you go with 16s make sure the tire sizes you want to go with are available. 16s don't come in as many sizes as the 15s. But, I think 16s may look better in the fenderwell if you end up choosing a lower series sidewall. IMO, the 60 series tires on 15s (like 235/60/15s) sitting under the front of truck (like in the pic of the blazer) look a bit small. 16s may help that.

Just a thought... The chopped and lowered satin black truck is smashingchuck's and it's wearing 17" smoothies. But, I can't remember who sells them.

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

What are the stock dimensions of the truck rallies like Slonakers. 15x6? 15x7? and whats the backspacing?

75Chevy90Kawi 08-26-2006 03:52 PM

Re: PIC REQUEST - dropped w/stock wheels

hhmm... well first off, that color on the smoothie (green) looks AWESOME! second, that slammed truck with smoothies, well, i wanted more sidewall than that. that's why i'm getting new wheels, is because i want more rubber and less chrome. i'll try to get a pic soon though.
