Painless or painful???
 

I'm considering buying a Painless wire harness for my 69. My current harness is not too bad but ever since my sarter problem i've been exploring the harness and have found some afro rigging here and there... should i painless or not and is it as bad as i've seen hinted? is there a better harness out there or should i just correct the bastardations as i find them?? :(

I just recently used a painless harness in my truck and it was fairly easy. It was my first time wiring anything and i managed to figure it all out. I had a friend helping who had just re-wired his 83 using a kit from LMC and he said the painless was much better.

That makes me feel better. I dont know, it just makes me feel better to have all new wiring. A good winter project i guess.

Another question... if i'm planning on putting a new crate ZZ383 in it, should i replace my current wire harness? does it matter? wouldn't the 383 connect the same way as my current 350ci?

it included everything you needed to re-wire the whole truck? how much was the kit and where did you get it from? Sumit has it for 310.00

I did my 69 step; minimal hassles. I got tired of chasing wire gremlins from P.O.

I have done several (10-15) painless full vehical harness and I like to use the universal GM column 18 circut kits. It gives you more wire and the option of re-routing wires right were you wnat them as well as a few extra circuts for added items you might want to add down the road. But their factory replacement harness is easier to install for the first timer.

If I understand correctly, Dont use the Painless harness, use the Universal GM column product? Do you have a link for this harness on where i can get it so i know its exactly what youre refering to?

I am here in Rockford and my 67 has a Painless 18 circuit harness in it if you want to check it out. Both harnesses mentioned above are Painless. They have a standard replacement and a universal 18 circuit (as well as a 12 circuit I think).

I bought the truck with the harness laying in it and then I wired it (so far). I would say it was very easy. The wires are all labeled and printed right on the wire.

The advanatage of the 18 Circuit is that you have extra circuit compared to stock for thinks like power windows, electric fuel pumps, etc.

As long as everything in the truck (including drivetrain) is from that same era, painless is great from what i hear. Painless gets painful when you start dealing with swaps like mine where they try to generate hydbrid wiring for you.

Well I have an Accel HEI and a Mini High Torque starter... would that make a difference?

I rewired my brothers '57 chevy pickup. Was very easy. Painless offers quite a few different options. You can buy anything from the basic kit or something that will support power windows, t.v.'s and gobs of stereo options.

So does the painless harness plug directly into the OE ignition switch, wiper switch, headlight switch, wiper motor, etc?

I have install the Engine&Front lights Harnesses & was easy no problem,haven't got to the dash yet' but should be no problem I am located just outside Winston Salem so its a local pickup for me,no shiping.
btw these harnesses are just like the Org.

hey bosie, i've installed a painless harness as well, between the 3-4 locals we have around here we should beable to knock out your truck in a few hours. i'll bring my heat gun and heat shrink so it's done right.

Close enough to stock. Look at it this way: If it's using the same power/signal wires, you probably need not worry.

My old engine (L6 250) used 5 wires to make it run and have dummy lights. The new one has about 60 wires to make it run. To boot, the new drivetrain is from a car built 33 years later :) Big diff''ce there.

My truck has HEI and the harness supported that. The ignition switch and some of the others were direct plug in connections. Head light and some others required the standard bulb plug to be spliced in. I soldered and heat shrunk all of my connections too. Roj is right, get 3-4 of us locals together and it would only take about a 1/2 day to lay a harness in a clean truck.
