How can I stop better?
 

What can I do to get this thing to stop better? Eventually I'll do rear disc brakes but don't have the money right now. Are there any brakes off a newer truck that will bolt up easy by chance, something with a bigger caliper perhaps? I haven't had much luck finding upgrade brake parts so far. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The 71-72 front discs on my 69 work very well. It's actually shocking how fast this big ol' rig can scrub speed. It's not an Indy car but it stop as well as my 2001 Tahoe (minus ABS). Are you sure everything is working properly?

I see that you have a lift with big tires so that may be the difference. I just saw and "upgraded" front disc kit in one of my catalogs. I think it was about $200 for calipers and rotors, but I'm not sure how much better they perform.

We put the 3/4 ton booster/master cylinder on my son's Burb. We have used it on trucks and it is a good upgrade. (The Burb is not on the road yet, but soon will be).

I'd heard about the 3/4 ton booster, but when I look up part numbers, it looks like the burbs come with them stock. Is that true? What catalog did you see that kit in? Thanks.

After I posted my first reply I was thinking about the 3/4 ton stuff. They have bigger rotors and calipers too don't they?

Yes, the rotor and calipers for a 3/4 ton are different, too include the spindles and probably the tie rods too. I do know about the spindles since I have changed my 3/4tn to a 1/2 ton suspension. There is a difference between the boosters too.

The 1/2 tons have a "single diaphram" booster, the 3/4 has the "dual diaphram" booster. Not sure if there are any differences on the rotors/calipers from a 4 x 4....

you have a 4x4 so the easy and cheap thing to do would be get an axle out of a 3/4 ton axles you should be able to get a set for 150 to 300. Then get the 3/4 ton booster and master $80 by them sepritly not together dont know why but autozone orillys all of them charge you 50 more for the pair togther you will have around 400 in the hole swap but you will stop a lot better.

Then you're going to 8-lug right? That means new wheels too if so.

You can do a rear disc install for ~$200-$300 depending on what you buy new/used. There's a good thread on Impala SS rear discs in the truck forum if you want to go that route.

Thanks for all the sugestions. I think I'll definetley try the 3/4 ton booster first. 2-300 for rear discs is feasble. I'll have to look a little more into that, have a link by chance? I'll look into doing the 3/4 ton axles too, I have to swap in a Ford front end anyway to get 4 wheel drive back so I'll see what I can find.

I got my rear disk brakets for 45 and calipers for 100. with new break lines every thing less then 200 in to it. But that was with out emergency break its going to cost alittle more the eldarodo calipers are expencive.

booster first.... I have a Jeep cherokee that i went from a single diaprham booster to a dual booster One of the better mods I did. good luck!

I bought my new 3/4 master and booster from auto zone for $80. But if you dont have power brakes already you will have to get a used set for the mounting hardware.

Thanks for the link! Looks pretty simple. I think I'll step it up a notch ( over the impala ) and try to do 4th gen f-body calipers since this things heavier than a pickup. Not sure about what rotors yet ( being 6 lug instead of 5) though.
earl87gta- I assume you are 6 lug also, what did you get the rotors from? Could I just use a set of front rotors? Also, I do have power brakes all ready.

Just found this in FAQ (start at post 13) Turns out I have a 3/4 ton booster! That explains things :lol:
