Standard bed vs. Super 10 bed
We have a 78 Chevy C20 with Super 10 decal on bed. Tape reveals it is about 5" longer than standard 8 ft. bed. The bed is real beat up and the question is; will a standard 8 ft bed fit? Appropriate years etc. Gas cap openings same?
Thanks |
Re: Standard bed vs. Super 10 bed
Ummm, I am pretty sure (99.9%) there were only two bed lengths available, 8 foot and 6.5 foot. I would double check your measurements, and post pics if you can.
I would go out on a limb and say 100% sure...but I have been wrong and learned new things from others here on the board...so I won't go there. :D |
Re: Standard bed vs. Super 10 bed
id think they will theres no way gm would make a different frame for one kinda truck. Gm is a frieght company (everything matches up with other cars).
But me id find a way to repair that bed only cause it would be unique. |

FWIW, a cab and chassis frame would work rather good for the extended wheelbase if that's how the extra length was created. |
Re: Standard bed vs. Super 10 bed
:o Well, I guess I should have investigated this a little further. I measured another bed on a truck of this vintage, and it was the same. I guess It depends on where you measure. Soooo...I posted too soon; before my brain was properly engaged. Sorry guys. I still would be interested in what the significance of the "Super 10" on both sides of the bed.
Here's what I know about the truck. It has been parked for 10 years. Had big rat's nests on top of the engine. All the wiring is chewed up. Odometer shows a little over 70,000 miles. Original owner recently deceased. He bought the truck new in Pennsylvania, drove it to CA. It was some kind of camper special; has fancy built-in tie downs to the frame. Owner only drove it occasionally, and parked it. I had seen the truck for many years, and when the old man died, I spoke to his son who lives in L.A. He essentially told me to "get it out of here"; which I was happy to do. I pulled it to my shop, pressure washed the engine clean, pulled the plugs and soaked the cylinders overnight with Marvel Mystery Oil. Changed the oil/filter, put new plugs/wires on, drained the fuel and put in fresh; put new battery in. Since all the wiring is trash, I jumped the starter and ignition wire. It started right up, and, after a huge cloud of smoke cleared ran good. The auto trans shifts back and forth. I haven't driven it because of the tires. It's going to be a huge project, but the price was right. I have a close friend that wants it. I think I'll stick with my 72. :) |
Re: Standard bed vs. Super 10 bed
You know, it almost sounds to me like the "Super 10" emblem is the second half of the die cast "Cheyenne Super 10" fender badge used on 1/2 ton pre-'75 Chevy trucks equipped with that trim option. Could it be that someone migrated such an altered emblem to the side of your truck?
Just a thought... Ken Lewis |
Re: Standard bed vs. Super 10 bed
Possible, I guess. It is a decal, but doesn't look like an addon. It definitely is a C20. I looked at the rear spring pack and it looks even beefier than my 72 C20. Since we determined it is a standard bed, I found one here in town off of an 84 for $50. It is in good shape and has a good tailgate. we'll go pick it up this AM.
