Anyone used a Painless Remote starter solenoid?

Trying to fix ALL of my trucks issues, and "hot start" is one of them. I hope this will be a permanent fix. Anyone used this kit? Is it any good? Where's a good place to mount it??

didn't use the Painless Kit, I just went to the parts store and got a Ford soleniod, ( already had wire and teriminals ), It's and easy modification that works great !!! Glad I did mine, helps starting during the hot summer months.

I used it. I mounted it to the inner fender near the starter.

You could probably find a cheaper one and just run wires yourself....but if you get the painless one its all there.

Definatly nice to have though!

My dad put one of the Painless "hot shot" relays on his (not the remote solenoid) - and it literally popped it.

I have no issues with mine. "If ain't broke..."

Thanks for all the feedback all. I think I'll order the painless kit. I've spent so much $$ on this damn truck, whats another $40 for a complete kit? I get tired of 2 or 3 trips to the parts stores (closest one is about 20 mins if there's no traffic :( ) Wiring is NOT cheap anymore either!

Ehh - I usually buy enough stuff to well cover the shipping. Plus, it's here in 2 days - which beats most places 1 week shipping.

What do you do with your existing solenoid? I would think you would have to have it there still to hook the wires to, but then what's the point if it is still there. Do you get a different starter too? Sorry for my ignorance.

Good question! :lol

I think you remove the old solenoid from the starter and connect the new wires where the old ones used to go, so no more heat soak into the solenoid. I hope that's all it is :lol:

GM combines two parts into one, the heavy duty "switch" and the electromagnet that presses the bendix gear into the flywheel. Ford separates these two components, moving the H/D switch to the firewall.

What's confusing is both setups are commonly referred to as "solenoids".

Besides the "brand insult", when you add the Ford firewall solenoid to the GM setup you're only (in effect) moving the heavy duty switch part and wiring away from the exhaust. The GM magnet that pulls the gear into the flywheel stays where it is and is subject to the same heat problems as all other starters.

If the hot start problems posted above were HD switch (solenoid) related, the remote Ford Solenoid approach will solve it well (just hide it under the heater box please). If it's bendix/magnet or hot starter dragging related it won't.

I just took a piece of flattened 1/2 copper tubing, drilled holes for battery stud and solenoid start post,bent and shaped it a bit and bolted it in place. When the F*rd solenoid sends battery current to the GM starter, the GM solenoid kicks in, too. I've done this for years, and I always run headers without any weak starts when hot(as long as the starter motor isn't wore out).

I see the above pic about how the solenoid looks on the fender, but does anyone have a diagram or schematic or idea or whatever about where all those wires are running to? I went to a local cruise this past saturday and could hardly get the truck to start any time i shut it down. I bought a ford solenoid at advance auto the following Sunday, but it came with no wires or instructions whatsoever. Any help greatly appreciated.

This is the way I do the F*rd setup.There is a short cable from battery POS post to one side of F*rd solenoid.On the other side all you have is the cable to the starter cable stud. This cable will only carry current when the F*rd solenoid is energized. No wiring is using the cable stud on the starter as a junction, just a flattened copper tubing jumper from the cable stud to the start terminal of the starter solenoid. The "S" terminal of the F*rd solenoid is 12 ga to the fuseblock firewall connector where the START wire comes out. Put on a ring terminal at the solenoid end and a Packard 56 series male crimp terminal at the firewall end. Unbolt the fuseblock connector and unplug the old START wire terminal and plug in the new 12ga. Sorry I don't have any pics or links, but it is not too hard. The hardest part for me was finding the Packard terminal.
